They don’t just add horsepower; they add an almost supernatural level of control, turning a potential handful into an balletic dance partner on the slickest surface imaginable. This is the promise of in-wheel hub motors, and I’ve just spent a day experiencing their potential firsthand. While most people associate hub motors with e-bikes and scooters, Elaphe has been working behind the scenes with automakers, developing black-ops prototypes like the one I’m driving. They’ve been preaching the gospel of distributed electric drive for years, waiting for the right moment to showcase its true potential on full-scale vehicles. Their biggest splash came with a partnership with Lordstown Motors, which looked set to bring their motors to the masses in the Endurance pickup. However, Lordstown’s bankruptcy left that dream in limbo. Now, Elaphe is back, demonstrating its technology on a range of platforms to show what’s possible when the constraints of traditional EV architecture are removed.
One of the most compelling testbeds? A Hyundai Ioniq 5. In its N performance guise, the Ioniq 5 is already a formidable EV. But the version I started with was a base model, a humble appliance tasked with surviving the treacherous conditions of a plowed handling circuit at Colmis Proving Ground, just outside Arjeplog, Sweden.\n\nIn its stock form, the Ioniq 5 is a testament to modern automotive engineering. It’s competent, refined, and incredibly easy to live with. On ice, however, that competence becomes a straitjacket. Ask for too much from its unstudded winter tires, and the stability and traction control systems cut power with brutal efficiency. Trying to accelerate out of a corner is a delicate negotiation—keep the steering and throttle within an impossibly narrow window, or go nowhere. Push beyond it, and the car simply refuses to move, the electronic nannies clamping down hard.\n\nInterestingly, a long press of the traction control button offers a temporary reprieve. With TC disabled, the standard Ioniq 5 transforms into something more engaging. Sliding is possible, tire spin is allowed, but the experience is far from rewarding. The car is exceptionally difficult to drive fast. It kicks into wild oversteer with little warning, then immediately plummets into terminal understeer the moment you try to power through. Even with an aggressive Scandinavian flick, the moment the throttle hits the floor, the car plows straight ahead, utterly unconvinced by my attempts at car control.\n\nEnter the Quad-Motor Ioniq\nWhat Elaphe has done is remarkable. They’ve taken this competent but ultimately conservative EV and transformed it into a dynamic marvel. The company binned Hyundai’s dual-motor setup and installed four in-wheel hub motors—one at each corner. Each motor is capable of producing a staggering 188 horsepower and 1,254 lb-ft of torque. Impressively, Elaphe integrated these motors with the car’s stock battery and power electronics, meaning the Ioniq 5’s dashboard still reports the remaining state of charge exactly as Hyundai intended.\n\nThe user experience is deceptively simple. You climb in, twist the drive selector forward for ‘D’, and everything seems normal. But that’s where the similarity ends. In the default drive mode, the car remains safe and easy to manage on the slick surface. However, where Hyundai’s safety systems cut power abruptly and are reluctant to give it back, Elaphe’s system is far more nuanced. As you turn into a corner, the Ioniq gently reduces power—so smoothly that you can keep your foot flat on the accelerator and simply drive around the bend. The system also increases regenerative braking on the inside wheels to help pivot the chassis, but it does so with a velvet touch, never allowing the car to slip into oversteer. There’s just enough understeer to keep novices from getting too ambitious, but enough confidence-inspiring stability to encourage exploration.\n\nStepping up to Sport mode introduces a livelier throttle response and allows for more aggressive maneuvers. Sport Plus cranks it up further, making the car happy to engage in moderate drifts. Hang the tail out a bit, and the car brings it back in line, relying on the individual regenerative braking power of the four wheels to scrub off speed without the clatter of ABS. It’s a ballet of electronic control, keeping the EV dancing on the edge of adhesion without ever letting it fall off.\n\nBut there’s one more mode, the one I’d been waiting for: Drift mode. Here, the safety net recedes, allowing the driver to take center stage. The system still provides a subtle helping hand if you fall too far behind, but by and large, you’re free to do as you please. The formerly staid Ioniq 5 becomes an absolute joy on the ice. You can hang the tail out through tight corners or power it sideways through fast sweepers. The car behaves with a clean, predictable nature—no abrupt power cuts, no clumsy interventions. It pivots and swings with an agility that belies its 4,600-pound weight, feeling more like a lightweight sports car than a hefty electric crossover.\n\nThe Weight Question\nOne of the most persistent myths about in-wheel hub motors is that the added weight at the wheels ruins handling. Elaphe representatives told me that their quad-motor Ioniq 5 weighs just a few pounds more than the stock version. The car retains its standard brakes, though the suspension has been upgraded to bespoke KW units, specifically calibrated to handle the additional mass in the wheels.\n\nEach motor weighs around 60 pounds, adding significant unsprung mass. Intuitively, this sounds like a recipe for disaster on a bumpy road. However, Elaphe CEO Gorazd Gotovac dismisses this concern. \”The top test drivers in the top performance OEMs would disagree,\” he told me. \”From my perspective, that’s enough for me.\” He acknowledges that for premium luxury vehicles, the unsprung weight could introduce complications in ride quality, but asserts that modern adaptive damping systems can easily compensate. \”High-mu, low-mu, on tarmac and on ice, we prove that every day to OEMs,\” he stated confidently.\n\nWhile I can’t fully evaluate the ride quality on the perfectly groomed test courses in Sweden, the handling improvements are undeniable. The potential drawbacks of the added mass are, in Elaphe’s view, far outweighed by the revolutionary advantages. By moving the motors to the wheels, you free up the chassis. This opens the door for much larger battery packs, expanded cargo space, or simply a more efficient overall packaging solution. In this Ioniq 5, the typical tiny frunk has been replaced by a cavernous empty space under the hood—room that could be used for luggage, cooling systems, or even additional battery capacity.\n\nBut the real magic happens when you design a vehicle from the ground up to utilize hub motors. In such a platform, cars can be significantly lighter. You can downsize the brakes, eliminate the need for complex differentials and reduction gearsets (which also sap power), and optimize the entire structure for efficiency. Elaphe estimates that this approach could reduce manufacturing costs by as much as 10 percent, thanks to smaller batteries and simpler overall architecture.\n\nEven the practicalities of maintenance are surprisingly straightforward. Servicing the brakes, which are now located behind the motors, is a simple process. Once you remove the wheel, you’ll find three exposed bolt heads. Loosen them, replace them with pins to secure the motor’s rotor and stator, unplug the electrical connector, and the motor lifts off. It’s a far cry from the complex driveline surgery required in traditional EVs.\n\nAWD American Muscle Reimagined\nThe prototype pony car provides an even more dramatic illustration of this technology’s potential. Since this was a one-off development vehicle, Elaphe’s engineers had to remove the rear seat and install a 9.0-kWh battery, complete with its inverter and all the requisite high-voltage cabling.
