Our objective was clear: dissect their capabilities across a comprehensive spectrum of challenges. This wasn’t a leisurely trail ride; we designed a gauntlet of tests replicating the most demanding scenarios an owner might encounter. From technical rock crawls that demand precision and articulation to steep hill ascents and controlled descents where traction and sophisticated electronic aids are paramount, we pushed these trucks to their absolute limits. Furthermore, the interior quality genuinely impressed, boasting rugged, on-brand trim and high-quality materials that feel durable and appropriate for an adventure vehicle. The wealth of physical controls for climate and audio is a welcome throwback, offering tactile feedback that often gets lost in screen-dominated cabins. Even visibility during hill climbs was commendable, aided by a low hood and effective forward camera.

However, the Mojave X’s “Desert Rated” branding feels somewhat aspirational when pushed to its limits on high-speed courses. The solid front axle, a hallmark of Jeep’s DNA, contributes to vague and numb steering feedback at pace, making it challenging to maintain precise lines. Its long wheelbase, while stable on pavement, becomes a significant liability off-road, resulting in a disappointing 20.9-degree breakover angle. This means frequent scraping and bumping over even moderately sized obstacles, eroding confidence. The Selec-Speed Control for hill descent also proved frustrating, often bringing the vehicle to an abrupt halt rather than a controlled, steady crawl. On-road, the steering precision continued to suffer, demanding constant corrections. Seat comfort was notably poor, with overly firm front seats and a cramped rear, garnering the lowest scores in our evaluation. The Pentastar V6 also struggled on the highway, lacking the passing power expected from a modern mid-size truck. Ultimately, despite its marketing, the Gladiator Mojave X remains more adept at slower-speed crawling, favoring an analog approach that rewards seasoned drivers but might challenge novices.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro: The Hybrid Trailblazer

The 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro arrives with significant fanfare, sporting a new platform and an innovative gas-electric hybrid powertrain. Furthermore, the Tacoma boasts arguably the best camera system among the group, offering clear, expansive views that greatly aid precision during technical crawling. Its exhaust note also provides a pleasing, almost muscle-car-like soundtrack when driven hard, enhancing the experience.

However, the TRD Pro revealed some critical weaknesses in our slower, technical tests. The throttle calibration in 4-Low and Rock modes was bizarrely jumpy and difficult to modulate, leading to jerky movements over obstacles. This, combined with overly sensitive brakes, often necessitated a two-foot driving technique for smooth operation. The Falken WildPeak tires, while capable, lacked the ultimate traction of the other contenders, struggling for grip at the peak of our hill climb. The IsoDynamic seats, while beneficial for the driver, severely compromise rear-seat legroom, making the back practically unusable for adults on anything more than short trips. Interior quality was also a significant concern; for a truck in this price bracket, the abundance of cheap-feeling, hard plastics and a discernible hood shake at highway speeds were disappointing. The massive multimedia screen, though visually striking, felt disconnected from the truck’s core systems, with many critical functions relegated to an unintuitive digital instrument panel and steering wheel controls. This created a frustrating user experience, especially when attempting to adjust settings on the fly.

Ford Ranger Raptor: The Uncompromising Desert King

The 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor, with its 2025 market relevance, firmly establishes itself as a high-speed off-road specialist. The Fox Live Valve suspension system worked flawlessly, absorbing punishing impacts and keeping the chassis incredibly composed. The twin-turbo V6 is a masterpiece, delivering linear, predictable power with vast reserves of torque, whether on a steep hill climb or merging onto a highway. The hill descent system was exceptionally smooth and effective, easing the truck down inclines with minimal drama. Perhaps its most surprising strength was its on-road demeanor. In Normal mode, the ride quality was remarkably refined for an off-road truck, providing a level of comfort and control that surpassed its rivals. Even the front seats were praised for their comfort and support on longer drives. The Ranger Raptor was also the only truck that could consistently handle jumps without unsettling landings, maintaining momentum into subsequent turns – a testament to its robust engineering.

Despite its many triumphs, the Ranger Raptor isn’t without its quirks. The large, prominent side steps, while visually assertive, proved counterproductive off-road, often scraping on rock obstacles without offering much practical benefit for ingress/egress. The portrait-style 12-inch touchscreen, while large, created a narrower viewing area for the external cameras compared to the horizontal displays of competitors. The transmission shifter also proved to be unintuitive for quick, decisive gear changes, leading to occasional confusion. While the front seats were comfortable, a lack of aggressive lateral bolstering in the bottom cushion was noted, a minor oversight for a truck designed for dynamic driving. However, these are minor criticisms in an otherwise highly capable and exceptionally fun-to-drive package.

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison: The Undisputed Rock-Crawling Champion

It simply floated over obstacles that challenged other trucks, providing a plush ride even over jagged terrain. The Multimatic DSSV shocks delivered exceptional damping, maintaining composure where others struggled. Its off-road tech usability also set a new standard; simplified controls and a large, horizontal display with outstanding graphics made engaging various off-road modes and systems remarkably intuitive. Chevrolet truly hit the sweet spot between physical controls for frequently used functions (climate, audio) and touchscreen integration for less common settings. The customizable digital instrument panel and responsive Google Built-In infotainment system, including seamless Apple CarPlay, further enhanced the user experience. Crucially, the underbody cameras offered unparalleled visibility, allowing for precise wheel placement, a game-changer in challenging technical sections.

However, the Bison’s extreme capabilities do come with some trade-offs. The massive 35-inch tires contribute to a bouncier, floatier, and less precise ride on pavement, though it still handles better than the Gladiator. Its higher center of gravity and tire choice also meant it struggled slightly on our high-speed off-road course, exhibiting poor forward visibility and a bouncy ride that limited confidence at pace – the only off-road test it didn’t outright win. Furthermore, the sheer height dictated by the 35-inch tires makes ingress and egress a significant climb, even for taller drivers, highlighting the need for a driver-side grab handle. A notable omission is a rearview camera mirror, which is sorely needed due to the bed-mounted full-size spare tire severely obstructing rearward visibility, raising safety concerns on the highway. Despite these minor drawbacks, the ZR2 Bison’s unparalleled technical off-road prowess firmly cements its position at the top.
