The Ultimate Off-Road Mid-Size Truck Showdown: 2025 Edition

As an off-road enthusiast with a decade of mud, rock, and desert dust under my belt, I’ve witnessed the

mid-size truck segment transform from utilitarian workhorses into highly specialized, incredibly capable adventure machines. For 2025, the competition among performance mid-size trucks has never been fiercer. Manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of advanced 4×4 systems and off-road technology, offering consumers an intoxicating blend of capability and everyday usability. But which one truly delivers the goods when the pavement ends?

We took the four titans of the mid-size off-road world to the crucible: the rugged proving grounds of Holly Oaks ORV Park. Our mission: to identify the best mid-size off-road truck for 2025 through a series of demanding tests, replicating real-world challenges from extreme rock crawling and treacherous hill climbs to exhilarating high-speed desert runs. We also rigorously assessed their on-road manners, acknowledging that even the most hardcore off-road vehicle investment needs to perform admirably on the daily commute. Our panel of seasoned experts meticulously scored each contender across these disciplines, culminating in an definitive ranking.

Let’s dive deep into what makes each of these premium off-road trucks tick, dissecting their strengths, uncovering their weaknesses, and revealing where they truly shine in the dynamic 2025 landscape.

The Contenders: A Glimpse into 2025’s Off-Road Elite

Our lineup featured the crème de la crème of the segment, each bringing a unique philosophy to the dirt:

2025 Jeep Gladiator Mojave X: The “Desert Rated” contender, promising high-speed prowess with traditional Jeep ruggedness.
2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro: The refreshed icon, now with a potent hybrid powertrain and innovative features.
2024 Ford Ranger Raptor: Ford’s high-speed desert predator, blending immense power with sophisticated suspension.
2025 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison: The AEV-fortified monster, boasting massive tires and unparalleled ground clearance.

The Fourth Contender: 2025 Jeep Gladiator Mojave X – The Analog Challenger

(As-tested price: $66,905 | Ground Clearance: 11.6 inches | Approach Angle: 44.7 degrees)

The 2025 Jeep Gladiator Mojave X arrives with its “Desert Rated” badge, a clear declaration of intent for high-speed desert running. It’s equipped with specialized Fox shocks, a 1-inch front lift, a locking rear axle, and robust 33-inch all-terrain tires, wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler Territory RT rubber. For the experienced off-roader, its more analog approach can be deeply rewarding, offering a direct, unfiltered connection to the trail.

Mojave X in the Wild: Performance Analysis

The Gladiator’s exceptional 44.7-degree approach angle is a genuine asset, allowing it to tackle steep obstacles head-on without risking front-end damage. In low-range, the V6’s power delivery is easily modulated, enabling precise, controlled climbs over formidable rock sections. This is where the Gladiator’s traditional strengths shine through; it just climbs. Its visibility, especially with the clear forward camera view, was also a standout during technical ascents, giving drivers confidence when cresting hills. The interior, despite some complaints about ergonomics, presents a rugged, on-brand aesthetic with quality materials and a welcome abundance of physical controls – a nod to old-school functionality in an increasingly digital world. This focus on tactile feedback for essential functions is a significant advantage for those who prioritize control over a touch-heavy interface in demanding off-road situations.

However, the Mojave X struggles to fully live up to its high-speed desert runner billing. Its solid front axle, while robust, contributes to a less refined experience at speed, leading to vague steering and a noticeable clumsiness through fast corners. This became acutely apparent on our high-speed course, where it demanded significantly more driver input to maintain control. The Achilles’ heel, however, is its breakover angle of 20.9 degrees – the worst in our comparison. That long wheelbase means the undercarriage frequently scrapes and bumps, limiting its versatility in varied terrain.

On-road, the Gladiator’s Pentastar V6, at 285 horsepower, feels underpowered for a vehicle of this size, particularly on highways where merging and passing require careful planning. The steering lacks precision, necessitating constant corrections, making longer drives tiresome. Furthermore, the front seats, while offering adequate bolstering, are overly firm, and the rear seat space is notably cramped, leading to the lowest seat comfort scores in our test. Even its Selec-Speed Control for hill descent proved frustrating, often bringing the truck to an abrupt halt rather than a controlled crawl.

The Gladiator Mojave X is a truck with character, appealing to purists who prefer a more hands-on off-road experience. However, its specialized design limits its broader appeal and versatility compared to the other contenders in this ultimate off-road truck review.

The Third Contender: 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro – The Modern Hybridist

(As-tested price: $66,410 | Ground Clearance: 11.5 inches | Breakover Angle: 27.4 degrees)

The 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro enters the ring as a completely redesigned model, featuring a compelling turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas-electric hybrid powertrain that delivers a combined 326 horsepower. It’s equipped with Fox shocks, 33-inch Falken WildPeak A/T AT3W tires, and innovative IsoDynamic front seats designed to reduce driver fatigue by minimizing body motions – a bold move in automotive off-road innovation.

Tacoma TRD Pro in the Wild: Performance Analysis

The Tacoma TRD Pro’s hybrid powertrain is undeniably potent, offering immediate torque delivery both on and off-road. On pavement, it’s a joy to drive, with quick transmission downshifts and eager responsiveness that belies its truck stature. This “go-fast” philosophy extends to our high-speed off-road course, where the TRD Pro demonstrated excellent stability and control, second only to the Ranger Raptor. It sounds fantastic too, with a growl that makes you feel like you’re piloting a dirt muscle car. The advanced camera system, displayed on its large multimedia screen, provided perhaps the best forward visibility for rock crawling and cresting hills, making precise wheel placement significantly easier. The IsoDynamic seats, though impacting rear-seat space, genuinely helped keep drivers planted during aggressive maneuvers.

However, the TRD Pro presented some perplexing usability issues that hindered its overall performance in more technical off-road scenarios. The throttle pedal, particularly in 4-Low and Rock modes, was bizarrely jumpy and incredibly difficult to modulate smoothly. This, coupled with equally sensitive brakes, often necessitated a two-foot driving method for finesse, which can be challenging for novices and frustrating for experts. Its Falken WildPeak tires, while generally capable, lacked the outright traction of some rivals, struggling for grip on the peak of our demanding hill climb.

On the interior front, the Tacoma TRD Pro, despite its hefty price tag, left something to be desired in terms of perceived quality. The cabin features an abundance of hard, hollow-sounding plastic trim, which feels underwhelming. The massive multimedia screen, while visually impressive, doesn’t always integrate seamlessly with the truck’s core systems; many vital controls are relegated to fussy gauge cluster and steering-wheel buttons, leading to an unintuitive user experience. Furthermore, the digital instrument panel’s menus are convoluted, and critical off-road readouts like tilt and inclinometer are too small to be genuinely useful. The IsoDynamic seats, while effective, come at the cost of almost entirely eliminating usable backseat space, making it impractical for carrying adult passengers for any length of time.

The 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro represents a significant leap forward in power and on-road refinement for the iconic nameplate. It’s a capable high-speed runner with innovative features. Yet, its peculiar throttle calibration for technical off-roading and some interior design choices hold it back from true segment dominance, indicating that even in 2025, modern doesn’t always mean perfectly optimized.

The Runner-Up: 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor – The Balanced Bruiser

(As-tested price: $60,730 | Ground Clearance: 10.7 inches | Powertrain: 405-hp, twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6)

The 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor brought its full-size F-150 Raptor sibling’s high-speed off-roading DNA to the mid-size segment. This performance midsize truck is powered by a ferocious 405-horsepower twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Its wide-track suspension, Watts-link rear setup, Fox Live Valve shocks, and locking front and rear axles, combined with 33-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A K03 tires, firmly establish its intent as a desert conqueror.

Ranger Raptor in the Wild: Performance Analysis

The Ranger Raptor lives up to its name, dominating our high-speed off-road course with unparalleled comfort and composure. Its steering and handling are superb, allowing drivers to confidently carry speed through sweeping corners. The Fox Live Valve suspension is a masterpiece, soaking up bumps and landings with an almost uncanny smoothness, making it the only truck in our test that could hit jumps without inducing a wince from the driver. This incredible damping capability translates directly into higher confidence and faster lap times, showcasing its exceptional heavy duty off-road capability at speed.

The twin-turbo V-6 is a marvel, delivering linear, predictable power with an abundance of torque across the rev range. This grunt was invaluable on our hill climb, providing ample, easily modulated power to conquer steep ascents. Crucially, the Ranger Raptor’s hill descent control system also proved highly effective, easing the truck steadily and smoothly down grades.

Beyond the dirt, the Ranger Raptor truly impressed on pavement. Its suspension, even in Normal mode, provides a level of ride comfort and control that the other trucks simply couldn’t match, minimizing occupant fatigue. Switching to Sport mode noticeably sharpens its performance for spirited on-road driving. The seats are a particular highlight, offering excellent comfort and support, which earned the Ranger Raptor the highest seat comfort score in our test. This remarkable balance between extreme off-road prowess and civilized on-road manners makes the Ranger Raptor an incredibly compelling package for the everyday adventurer. It is truly an exceptional midsize truck investment for those seeking versatility.

However, a few minor quirks kept the Raptor from clinching the top spot. The prominent side steps, while ostensibly for utility, proved to be more of a liability on rocky obstacles, getting torn up without providing much practical benefit given the truck’s accessible ride height. The 12-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen, while large, offered a smaller viewing area for external cameras compared to the horizontal displays of its rivals, which could be a hindrance in tight off-road situations. The transmission gear selector also felt less intuitive than it should, sometimes confusing drivers. Finally, while the front seats are comfortable, they could benefit from more aggressive lateral bolstering in the bottom cushion to match the backrest, especially given the truck’s dynamic capabilities.

The 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor is a masterclass in high-speed off-roading and a surprisingly refined daily driver. Its blend of power, sophisticated suspension, and on-road comfort makes it a formidable contender, setting a high bar for performance off-road suspension and powertrain integration in the mid-size segment. It’s an easy recommendation for those who prioritize rapid trail exploration and cross-country expeditions.

The Champion: 2025 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison – The Unstoppable Crawler

(As-tested price: $64,915 | Ground Clearance: 12.2 inches | Tires: Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT LT315/70R17)

The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison is not just a truck; it’s a statement. Building on the Colorado’s 2023 redesign, the 2025 ZR2 Bison, co-developed with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), is engineered for extreme terrain. It boasts AEV bumpers and wheels, Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSV) shocks, locking front and rear axles, boron-steel skid plates, rock sliders, and crucially, towering 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT LT315/70R17 mud-terrain tires. This combination yields a class-leading 12.2 inches of ground clearance, making it the undeniable monster truck of our comparison. This is the epitome of heavy duty off-road capability.

Colorado ZR2 Bison in the Wild: Performance Analysis

The ZR2 Bison’s dominance in technical off-roading was absolute. The advantages of those massive 35-inch tires became immediately apparent: superb traction, exceptional damping over large rocks, and an unparalleled ability to simply float over obstacles that challenged other trucks. It conquered our rock crawl, hill climb, and hill descent tests with remarkable ease, inspiring immense driver confidence. The Multimatic DSSV shocks are engineering marvels, providing an incredible balance of control and compliance over the most unforgiving terrain.

Its hill descent control system, coupled with the immense grip of its mud-terrain tires, made steep descents a stress-free event. On ascents, the extra ground clearance and superior breakover angle allowed it to crest hills with room to spare. Chevrolet also nailed the user interface for off-road operations. Simplified controls and a large, horizontal display screen with outstanding graphics make engaging various off-road modes and systems incredibly intuitive. The overall user experience (UX) within the cabin is excellent, striking the right balance between physical buttons for frequently used functions (climate, audio) and touchscreen controls for less common settings. The customizable digital instrument panel is bright and vivid, and the Google Built-In infotainment system, with seamless Apple CarPlay integration, is responsive and intuitive – critical for any modern off-road truck technology suite. The underbody cameras are a game-changer, providing essential visibility for precise wheel placement, further enhancing confidence in tricky situations. This holistic approach to customizable off-road vehicles is why it earns its top rank.

However, the Bison’s extreme specialization does come with trade-offs. Those formidable 35-inch tires, while kings off-road, contribute to a bouncier, floatier, and less precise ride on pavement. Handling suffers from a noticeable vagueness and slower responses compared to the Ranger Raptor or Tacoma, though it remains more composed than the Gladiator. On our high-speed off-road course, the Bison struggled. Its higher center of gravity, coupled with the less precise steering and bouncy ride, limited driver confidence and pace, preventing it from outright winning this specific test.

Entry and exit are also a significant challenge. The sheer height necessitated by the 35-inch tires means a considerable climb into the driver’s seat, even for taller individuals, and a driver’s-side grab handle would be a welcome addition. Perhaps the most glaring on-road deficiency is the lack of a rearview camera mirror. The bed-mounted full-size spare tire severely obstructs the rear view, creating a notable blind spot that can feel unsafe on highways. This oversight, particularly in a vehicle that needs optimal rear visibility, is a puzzling omission.

Despite these on-road compromises and its high-speed limitations, the 2025 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison unequivocally secures its position as the best mid-size off-road truck for 2025 when it comes to tackling the gnarliest trails. Its superior ground clearance, robust AEV enhancements, and exceptional slow-speed technical capability make it the ultimate choice for serious off-road adventurers.

The Verdict: A Specialist’s Triumph in a Diverse 2025 Market

Our comprehensive 2025 Mid-Size Off-Road Truck Challenge results are in:

2025 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison (643 points)
2024 Ford Ranger Raptor (629 points)
2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro (527 points)
2025 Jeep Gladiator Mojave X (524 points)

The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison stands as the undisputed champion for pure, unadulterated off-road prowess, particularly in challenging low-speed scenarios like rock crawling and steep ascents/descents. Its combination of massive tires, segment-leading ground clearance, and sophisticated Multimatic DSSV shocks gives it an almost unfair advantage. It’s truly a testament to specialized engineering in the midsize off-road performance segment.

The 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor, however, earns a well-deserved second place, showcasing an extraordinary balance. For those who prioritize high-speed desert running and a surprisingly comfortable on-road experience, it is arguably the more versatile and enjoyable daily driver, representing an excellent off-road vehicle investment. Its twin-turbo V6 and Fox Live Valve suspension set a benchmark for dynamic capability.

The 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, with its powerful hybrid engine and innovative IsoDynamic seats, offers a compelling modern package that excels at speed. However, its peculiar throttle calibration for technical off-roading and some interior quality concerns held it back. Finally, the 2025 Jeep Gladiator Mojave X, while a strong contender for approach angles and rewarding for experienced drivers, couldn’t overcome its long wheelbase and less refined on-road manners to compete with the top two in overall versatility and performance.

The 2025 market clearly illustrates a trend towards hyper-specialization in off-road pickup comparison tests. Whether you’re a dedicated rock crawler, a high-speed desert racer, or seeking a balanced adventure rig, there’s a mid-size truck meticulously engineered for your specific passion. Choosing the right one boils down to understanding your primary use case and prioritizing features accordingly.
