- 4 Oct 2025 – 22:50 (22:50 GMT)Here’s what happened todayThis live page will be closing soon, but before we go, here are today’s top developments:
- US President Donald Trump said he “appreciated” that Israel had stopped bombing Gaza to allow for a ceasefire deal.Hamas said in a statement that the ongoing attacks on the enclave proved that Israel was continuing its “horrific crimes and massacres” on Palestinians.
- In his first speech since Hamas accepted Trump’s proposal, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said negotiators will be working on a timeline for the release of captives. An informed diplomatic source told our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic that technical negotiations to implement the first phase of Trump’s ceasefire plan will take place in Cairo on Monday.Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, said he and his Otzma Yehudit party told Netanyahu they would leave the government if Hamas “remains in existence”.In an interview with the US news outlet Axios, Trump said one of his goals in pushing for a ceasefire deal was to rehabilitate Israel’s image.Adalah, a legal centre for Palestinians in Israel, said detainees from the Global Sumud Flotilla have complained of mistreatment at Ktzi’ot Prison.British police arrested 355 people for protesting in support of Palestine Action, which the UK government designated as a “terrorist organisation” in July.

Key question is whether Trump will remain engaged on GazaMatt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy think tank, says Trump has “staked some of his credibility” on getting a Gaza ceasefire, securing the release of the Israeli captives and funnelling aid into the Strip. He noted that the US is the only country in the world that can apply enough pressure on Israel to make any of that happen.“Benjamin Netanyahu in particular has shown a great ability to withstand pressure from his own domestic politics, withstand pressure from European partners, but he understands that he must stay in the good graces of President Donald Trump,” Duss told Al Jazeera.“And now, Trump has made clear that he wants this ceasefire to happen, for the war to end. So, that’s what Netanyahu has to contend with right now.”But Duss said a major question is whether Trump will remain engaged on Gaza. “Will he be distracted by some other issue, either in foreign affairs or domestic affairs? Obviously, [there is] a lot going on around the world and in the United States,” he said.“But a very key question right now is will Trump remain engaged here, press the parties to move forward and particularly, will he continue to put pressure on Netanyahu … to make his commitment to end the war a real thing instead of just words?”Click here to share on social media
- 4 Oct 2025 – 22:30 (22:30 GMT)WATCH: Can a ‘one-sided, unserious’ US plan deliver peace to Gaza?US political scientist Stephen Walt says the Trump administration is staging a “half-hearted” intervention that will not lead to peace. That’s because the US plan to end Israel’s war on Gaza is designed, supervised and administered “primarily by people who are very staunchly pro-Israel”, said Walt, a professor of international relations at Harvard University.“We’ve seen this movie before,” Walt told Steve Clemons, host of Al Jazeera’s The Bottom Line.See the full interview below:

They treated us like animals,” Helmi said, adding that detainees were denied food, clean water and medication.Beaver said Thunberg was “treated terribly” and “used as propaganda”, recalling how she was shoved into a room as far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir entered.Read more here.

President Trump should hold Israel accountable now – before more innocent lives are needlessly taken.”The US has provided billions of dollars in military assistance to Israel since the country began its war on Gaza in October 2023.Like his predecessor Joe Biden, Trump has rejected calls to suspend that funding in light of atrocities committed by Israeli forces against Palestinians, including war crimes.

- 4 Oct 2025 – 21:30 (21:30 GMT)Israel continuing to commit ‘horrific crimes and massacres’ in Gaza: HamasThe Palestinian group says the continued attacks on Gaza are proof of “Netanyahu’s lies” about ceasing its military operation in the enclave after Trump’s call.“The Zionist occupation army continues to commit its horrific crimes and massacres against our Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip,” Hamas said in a statement, adding that 70 people had been killed in attacks since this morning. The group called on the international community, including Islamic and Arab states, to take “urgent action to protect and provide relief to our people”.“Exert all possible pressure to stop the war of extermination and starvation that has been ongoing for two years in the Gaza Strip. We call on the free people of the world to continue and escalate their solidarity activities with our Palestinian people, and to pressure the occupation to stop its aggression and crimes of extermination and starvation against Gaza,” the group added.
