Officers say 41-year-old Torrey Thompson of Oxford was allegedly intoxicated and attempting to fight others at the station. As officers arrived, Thompson got into a vehicle, failed to yield to oncoming traffic, and began driving through opposing lanes, police said.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 6, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — A 30-year-old man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly fled from a Maverik gas station pump, at 425 S. Redwood Road, and noticed that an officer turned on police lights near the stolen vehicle.

The Salt Lake City Police officer received a notice after the vehicle was seen on his vehicle camera, and he found the car, a gold Chevrolet sedan, apparently empty and at the pump, says an arrest document for Joe Anthony Peck.

The court document says the officer “observed the suspect, later identified as Joe Peck, look at me and quickly enter the vehicle. I momentarily activated my siren and positioned my vehicle directly in front of the Chevrolet. I observed Peck looking directly at me again and turning back towards the rear windshield.

“Peck rapidly accelerated in reverse, lost control of the vehicle and struck a gas pump, completely ripping it out of the ground. The Chevrolet was on top of the gas pump. Peck attempted to drive forward but the car was stuck.”

The officer used his vehicle to block the Chevrolet.

“At this point the gas pump ignited, and the Chevrolet became engulfed in flames,” the arrest document says. “Peck exited the Chevrolet via the front passenger door and began fleeing on foot westbound.”

The arrest document says the officer chased Peck on foot, and repeatedly ordered him to stop and get on the ground. Peck did not comply, court records say.

“Peck ran across all lanes of Redwood Road and proceeded to run southbound on the west sidewalk. Eventually, I caught up with Peck and pulled him to the ground. Assisting officers arrived and placed Peck in handcuffs without further incident.”

Peck was arrested for investigation of the alleged crimes of:

  • Receive or transfer stolen vehicle, a second-degree felony
  • Property damage, destruction/loss of more than $5,000, a second-degree felony
  • Failure to stop at command of a police officer, a class A misdemeanor
  • Possession of controlled substances schedule I/II/analog, a class A misdemeanor
  • Use or possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor
  • Fail to comply duties at vehicle accident with property damage, a class B misdemeanor
  • Driving on denied license, a class C misdemeanor
  • Pedestrians, failing to yield right of way, an infraction

“Post Miranda, Peck admitted to having knowledge of the vehicle being stolen, being in possession of hit, fleeing, and possession of the narcotics,” the arrest document says.

He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail without bail.
