Moment Travis Decker’s ‘lookalike’ realizes he’s been mistaken for accused killer dad: ‘Oh my God, they think I’m that guy’

A bearded Idaho man has revealed how he was mistaken for accused killer dad Travis Decker on a remote hiking trip — sparking a massive interstate manhunt some 500 miles from the original crime scene.
The US Marshals task force abruptly announced earlier this month they were zeroing in on Idaho’s Sawtooth National Forest after two tipsters thought they’d spotted Decker there over the July Fourth weekend.
But it turned out were actually hunting a lookalike rather than the fugitive dad accused of murdering his three young daughters.
The apparent doppelganger, who only identified himself as Nick, said he only realized he was the subject of the frantic search when he made it home and returned to work.

“Everything seems normal until my friend who was up there with me sent a text saying, ‘Bro, there’s a manhunt for a killer that was in the campground with us. My God, we spent the night next the murder that is frightening’,” Nick told Idaho News 6.
He said he called authorities himself to let them know he was in the campground and immediately found himself being questioned.
“They friendly interrogated me for a half hour. The search described me like, the hair, the beard, the hat, the glasses, my tattoo, earrings, my shirt. Shorts were a different color, my shoes, the backpack, the location,” he said.
“I said ‘Oh my God, they think I’m that guy’.”
Soon after speaking with Nick, law enforcement announced they’d called off the search for Decker in the central Idaho forest.
“In my opinion, I don’t realistically look like that guy. They saw me from a distance,” Nick said.
Despite the mix-up, Nick added that he was actually glad the tipsters alerted authorities.
“Be careful because this has been a little tumultuous time for me and people around me. It’s been disruptive at work, but I would encourage people to do that,” he said.

Authorities have been hunting Decker since June 2 when his three daughters — Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5 — were found murdered at Rock Island Campground in Washington state.
Despite multiple false alarms, Decker hasn’t been seen since he vanished.
Decker, who reportedly suffered from PTSD and other mental health problems, is believed to have wilderness survival training from the military.

What happens in Trap?
To celebrate her good grades, Philadelphia firefighter Cooper Abbott (Josh Hartnett) takes his daughter, Riley (Ariel Donoghue), to see her favorite pop star, Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan), in concert. But when they arrive at the event, Cooper notices that security is on extra-high alert. He watches as, one by one, guards remove other dads accompanying their daughters from the show, and realizes that every exit is blocked off by police. An employee at the arena tells Cooper that the FBI has reason to believe a notorious serial killer known as The Butcher is attending the concert, and they’re using the event to try to ensnare and arrest him. With the entire arena under surveillance, and thousands of armed police officers ready to sniff out the killer, The Butcher will have to find his way out without drawing attention to himself — or his daughter.

Is Trap based on a true story?
Directed by M. Night Shymalan (The Watchers, After Earth), Trap isn’t directly based on a true story, but the plot was partially inspired by a real-life sting operation known as Operation Flagship. In 1985, the US Marshals Service and the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department sent out more than 3,000 invitations by mail to fugitives with outstanding warrants living in the DC area. The invitations, which were sent using the name of the fictitious television company Flagship International Sports TV, stated that the individuals had been selected to receive free tickets to a Dec. 15 NFL game between the Washington Redskins (now known as the Washington Commanders) and the Cincinnati Bengals, as well as a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to Super Bowl XX in New Orleans.
When the fugitives arrived to retrieve their tickets at what they were led to believe was the network’s headquarters, they were greeted by undercover marshals and police officers posing as ushers, cheerleaders, mascots, and other event staff. Operation Flagship resulted in the arrest of 101 people. Speaking about the inspiration behind Trap, Shyamalan told BBC News that he heard about Operation Flagship as a kid. “I thought it was totally absurdist, that this actually happened … This was real-life criminals, FBI and police,” he said, “They dressed up as cheerleaders and mascots and were dancing around with them and goofing around with them.”
