When Stupid Karens Try To Fight Cops

No, a Karen didn’t call police on her new Black neighbor who turned out to be the Boston police chief; to start, we don’t have a police chief

Not Boston’s new police chief. It’s Daniel Hahn, first Black police chief in Sacramento, which is westa 128.

There’s a video floating around online that purports to be a news report on a nosy White woman with a stupid little dog who called 911 when she spotted her new apartment neighbor, a Black man – who turned out to be Boston’s new “police chief.” It’s a great story – not for the anger it’s supposed to generate but for the way it illustrates how easy it is to generate fake news with AI these days.

To start, Boston doesn’t have a police chief. We have a police commissioner. And he’s not named Marcus Thompson (for some reason, bogus-story generating AI systems love the name “Marcus”).

The Boston police commissioner wears civilian clothes, not a police uniform, while on the job.

The first Black guy briefly shown in uniform in the supposed report is William Gross, who hasn’t been commissioner for 4 1/2 years. The video of him is probably from when Marty Walsh announced his appointment as police commissioner, elevating him from superintendent in chief (a post for which he would wear a uniform) back in 2018 (from the looks of the sign, featuring Walsh’s name, it may have been in the Eagle Room in City Hall, where Walsh made announcements like that).

The second Black man shown in a uniform is wearing, well, whatever that uniform is, it’s not a Boston uniform.

Whoever the purported “chief” is in the alleged hallway surveillance video is definitely not either Michael Cox, who has been commissioner since 2022, nor Gross, nor Dennis White, who served as commissioner for like two days and, in any case, as we know from his saga, lived in his own house.

Gross, White and Cox are not known for having a goatee.

The Karening supposedly took place in the Glendale Arms apartment building. Boston doesn’t have a Glendale Arms apartment building (it does have a Bacon Chambers apartment building, which sounds delicious, and as relevant as everything in that video). Also, the “report” claims he had just moved into apartment 400, but the video shows him opening the door to apartment 38.

Snopes has more.

Two People Dumb Enough To Fight Cops At Falcons-Panthers Game, And Of Course, They Lose

I will never in my life understand people who try to fight police officers … idiots.

It was an absolutely glorious Sunday for the Carolina Panthers as they powerhoused their way to a 30-0 shutout victory over their NFC South rival Atlanta Falcons. Despite that, however, it ended up being a bad day for a couple of Cardiac Cats fans.

A fight ended up breaking out between fans in the seats of Bank of America Stadium, and things escalated to cops showing up to take care of the scene. (RELATED: Wild Fight Breaks Out During Cardinals-49ers Game That Includes Super Fat Dude Rollin’ His Opposition)

According to video, an older Carolina fan stupidly made the choice to fight back against the officers. Yeah, wrong move, as several of Charlotte’s finest restrained him. But he wasn’t the only clown who got physical with police. There was also this other goof that decided to get involved.

He was quickly taken care of though, as one of the officers dealing with the original Panthers troublemaker took down the younger Carolina fan with ease where he would be placed in handcuffs.

When the smoke cleared, the younger Panthers fan was taken up the stairs, and not much longer afterwards, the older supporter followed. I’m assuming they both went to jail, but none of that information is known.

Panthers miss shot at NFC South lead after bang-bang late hit on QB Tyler Shough cuts 15 yards off Saints’ game-winning FG

This is a tough way to lose ground in the playoff race.

The Carolina Panthers needed a win over the three-win New Orleans Saints on Sunday to take the lead in the NFC South over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Instead, they lost to one of the NFL’s worst teams in part due to a late hit that cut 15 yards off a would-be 62-yard field-goal attempt.

With 12 seconds remaining in a 17-17 game, Saints quarterback Tyler Shough took off on a designed run up the middle as New Orleans tried to get into field-goal range. Shough gained four yards and slid at the last moment as rookie Panthers safety Lathan Ransom barreled down on him.

Ransom hit Shough as Shough slid, immediately drawing multiple penalty flags.

Officials flagged Ransom for unnecessary roughness, and a 4-yard gain turned into a 19-yard gain.

Two plays later, Saints kicker Charlie Smyth hit a 47-yard go-ahead field goal with two seconds remaining that iced the 20-17 New Orleans win. Without the penalty, Smyth’s attempt would have been from 62 yards.

Would Smyth have hit from 62? We’ll never know. The kicker was playing in just his third NFL game and has a career long of 56 yards in his brief pro career.

Regardless, it added up to a difficult way to lose a football game and a tough moment for Ransom, a fourth-round rookie out of Ohio State. It’s always tough for a defender to be penalized when a quarterback goes into his slide that late. But that hit will consistently draw a flag in the NFL as the burden remains on defenders to avoid late hits on quarterbacks.

Ransom was asked to address the penalty at his postgame locker.

“Every yard matters in that situation, so he’s running the ball, and I’m just thinking stop him as fast as I can,” Ransom said.

Ransom added that it’s “difficult” when asked how difficult it is for a defender to anticipate when a quarterback will initiate his slide. He was then asked what he could have done differently to avoid the penalty.

“Not hit him,” Ransom said.

The loss dropped the Panthers to 7-7 and into a tie atop the NFC South with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who lost Thursday night to the Falcons. A win, obviously, would have given them a one-game lead with three games remaining in the regular season.

The good news for the Panthers is they have two of their three remaining games against the Buccaneers and remain in control of their path to the playoffs. But they missed a critical chance to build a cushion over the Bucs in excruciating fashion.

Panthers struggling to handle success, lose control of destiny in NFC South playoff race

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers are still learning how to handle success.

While the Panthers have thrived in the underdog role this season with wins over Green Bay and the Los Angeles Rams, they continue to struggle winning the games they’re supposed to win.

Sunday was the latest example.

The Panthers, needing a win over the last-place New Orleans Saints at the Superdome to take full control of the NFC South, instead surrendered a fourth-quarter lead and lost 20-17, leaving them on the outside looking in at the playoff picture with a 7-7 record. They’re tied with Tampa Bay with two head-to-head games remaining against the Buccaneers, who are in the driver’s seat in terms of tiebreakers.

Carolina has now lost 12 straight games when listed as the betting favorite, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. The Panthers have not won a game they’re favored to win since Week 3 of the 2021 season.

Second-year head coach Dave Canales attributed some of that to a young team still learning how to win.

“I see the inconsistency of play that we can have at times, and to me this is a group that is still growing in terms of just finding week in, week out success that way,” Canales said Monday. “And that’s what I really attribute it to. That’s what it looks like on film.”

Canales pointed out that when a team begins to win big games, it tends to catch an opponent’s attention, and the attention to details needs to be amped up.

“I know that when you go into a game as a favorite or you start to build some momentum, the other team also sees that and they’re aware like, ‘hey, let’s go,’ and that calls on them to give their best,” Canales said.

What’s working

Carolina has converted more fourth-down conversions (23) than any team in the league and its 70% conversion rate is fifth best in the league.

However, the Panthers failed on the biggest fourth-down conversion attempt of the season on Sunday when the Saints blew up a fourth-and-1 run up the middle by Chuba Hubbard while Carolina was leading 17-10 early in the fourth quarter. If Carolina had converted the fourth down — or kicked the 53-yard-old field goal — that would have made it a two-score game.

Instead, the Panthers never scored again and lost.

The Panthers aren’t a team that runs the tush push, largely because of the diminutive nature of quarterback Bryce Young, who is listed at 5-foot-10 and a generous 204 pounds on the team’s website.

“It’s physics,” Canales said. “He goes about 190 pounds, and when you have a 220-, 230-pound quarterback leaning on a center, that’s an advantage.”

What needs help

Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn is considered one of the top cornerbacks in the league, but he continues to struggle against Saints wide receiver Chris Olave.

Olave, who burned Horn for a long TD pass in New Orleans’ 17-7 win over Carolina in November, was huge down the stretch and beat Horn in 1-on-1 coverage for a 12-yard touchdown on a slant route with 2:29 left to tie the game at 17. Olave had three catches for 47 yards — two with Horn in coverage — on the game-tying drive and finished with six catches for 85 yards.

Canales said the Panthers were “totally disjointed” on the back end of the defense after the Saints went “tempo” during that drive.

Stock up

Panthers wide receiver Jalen Coker missed the first six games of the season but is rounding into form.

Coker had four catches for 60 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown on a well-thrown ball from Young. Coker now has 10 catches for 134 yards in the last two games, including two touchdown receptions. By comparison, struggling starting wide receiver Xavier Legette has just five catches for 40 yards over the last two weeks.

Stock down

Panthers rookie linebacker Lathan Ransom made a huge mistake on Sunday with nine seconds left when he hit a sliding Tyler Shough on the quarterback’s final carry of regulation. That drew a penalty that moved the Saints 15 yards closer to the end zone, turning a 62-yard field-goal attempt by Charlie Smyth into a 47 yarder.

Smythe made the kick to give the Saints the win.

Derrick Brown also was called for a penalty on the sliding Shough earlier in the game.

Injuries

The Panthers played without DT Turk Wharton because of a hamstring injury after he tripped on a teammate during a walkthrough practice on Friday. Canales called it unfortunate, adding that he has never seen anything like it in all of his years as an NFL coach.

Key number

4-0 — Baker Mayfield’s record against the Panthers since being cut by Carolina.

Next steps

The Panthers have two games left against the Bucs (Week 16 and 18) and may need to beat their NFC South rivals to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2017. If they don’t sweep the Bucs, the Panthers will need help in Week 17 from other teams.

Raheem Morris: Upset win should spur Falcons to finish strong

With three games left in a disappointing campaign, all Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris wants to see is his team fight.

In a season that’s seen Atlanta (5-9) find countless ways to lose, Morris’ team is coming off a rare high. Against all odds, the Falcons overcame a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit and a franchise-record 19 penalties to stun the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers 29-28 on Thursday on Zane Gonzalez’s last-second field goal.

After losing seven of the previous eight games to ensure Atlanta’s eighth straight losing season, Morris hopes the comeback win can begin a momentum-building finish.

“All you can do is go out there and put together what it should look like and how you feel like it should look,” Morris told reporters Monday. “They went out the other night and did a lot of repeatable things, but there’s still always things to clean up.”

Ahead of an offseason with several question marks — including Morris’ job security — one of the pressing matters concerns tight end Kyle Pitts. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 draft, Pitts’ four-plus seasons in Atlanta have been marred with inconsistency, but the impending free agent posted the best statline of his professional career Thursday.

Pitts, 25, hauled in 11 catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns, giving the Falcons what they’ve been waiting for all season. Pitts has taken advantage of the absence of leading receiver Drake London, who’s missed the last four games with a PCL strain in his knee.

“He’s out there as the No. 1 wideout, so to speak,” Morris said of Pitts. “He got the targets that Drake would get when he’s playing. We’ve seen glimpses of it throughout the season at times. You always want more. Last Thursday, he left us not wanting more. He left us really inspired and feeling really good about how he performed.”

For quarterback Kirk Cousins — who is likely winding down his Falcons tenure as the 37-year-old has a $57.5 million cap hit if he’s on the 2026 roster — the final three games can serve as an audition for a possible offseason suitor.

Cousins threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns Thursday in his best performance since taking over for the injured Michael Penix Jr. in Week 12. Making life easier ahead of a road matchup against the Arizona Cardinals (3-11) on Sunday, London’s outlook is becoming more optimistic, according to Morris.

“Day-to-day, but more hopeful,” Morris said of London’s status. “We’ll get a chance to get him out there, and obviously, you’ve got to get through practice week, and we’ll do that on Wednesday and Thursday. But I’m very hopeful that he can go out there and play for us.”
