A New Frontier in Electric Vehicle Dynamics? Unveiling Elaphe’s In-Wheel Hub Motor Prototype on the Ice in a Hyundai Ioniq 5
Prepare for a paradigm shift in electric vehicle (EV) performance and packaging. We had the exclusive opportunity to evaluate Elaphe’s cutting-edge in-wheel hub motor technology within a Hyundai Ioniq 5 on the frozen expanse of a Swedish lake. The results were nothing short of revolutionary, potentially reshaping the future of EV design and capability.
**The Allure of Unstudded Horsepower on Ice**
Imagine the scene: a 500-horsepower, front-engined, rear-drive American pony car gliding effortlessly across a frozen lake, completely devoid of tire studs. It sounds like a recipe for chaos, a delicate ballet demanding the utmost restraint from the driver. Yet, here I was, in early March, on a vast Swedish ice rink, experiencing the exact opposite. My right foot was firmly planted on the accelerator, the car executing wide, controlled drifts with an ease that felt almost supernatural. The secret? Advanced front-axle integration and sophisticated stability control systems.
In this particular machine, the front axle, normally home to nothing more than brakes, suspension components, and steering linkages, housed something extraordinary: a pair of high-performance electric motors. Bolted directly over the front brakes and cleverly integrated within the wheel arches, these motors not only delivered substantial power but, more importantly, endowed the car with an unprecedented level of capability on the slippery surface. This wasn’t just about speed; it was about control, precision, and a level of driver engagement previously unimaginable in such conditions.
**From Humble Beginnings to Slovenian Innovation**
The brains behind this automotive marvel come from a relatively unassuming Slovenian company: Elaphe. Though in operation since 2006, Elaphe has largely operated behind the scenes, collaborating on high-stakes, “black-ops” projects with various manufacturers. Their core mission has always been to champion the virtues of in-wheel hub motors, advocating for their application on larger, more ambitious platforms than the electric scooters and e-bikes where they are most commonly found.
Elaphe’s most prominent collaboration to date was with Lordstown Motors, a partnership that held the promise of bringing their innovative technology to the mainstream automotive market. However, the unforeseen collapse of Lordstown brought those initial dreams to an abrupt halt. Now, unburdened by prior commitments, Elaphe is free to showcase the full spectrum of its capabilities across a diverse range of vehicles.
**The Hyundai Ioniq 5: A Testbed for Innovation**
Our test platform for this groundbreaking evaluation was a modified Hyundai Ioniq 5. In its celebrated ‘N’ performance guise, the Ioniq 5 is already a formidable machine. However, the base model, stripped of its performance enhancements, is a far more modest proposition, particularly when confronted with the challenges of ice. Our initial foray into the Ioniq 5’s capabilities began on a meticulously plowed handling circuit at the renowned Colmis Proving Ground, located just outside the Arctic town of Arjeplog, Sweden.
Even in its standard configuration, the Ioniq 5 demonstrates commendable competence. However, when pushed beyond its limits on a set of unstudded snow tires, the vehicle’s stability and traction control systems react swiftly and decisively, often with an abruptness that unsettles the chassis. Attempting to accelerate through a corner requires navigating a razor-thin margin between control and chaos. Venture even slightly outside this narrow operational window, and the car simply refuses to progress.
Interestingly, a simple, prolonged press of the traction control button allows for the complete deactivation of these electronic safety nets. Once freed from their constraints, the stock Hyundai transforms into a dramatically different entity. It becomes possible to initiate and sustain slides, to deliberately spin the tires in a manner that is both engaging and exhilarating. Yet, this newfound freedom comes with its own set of challenges. The standard Ioniq 5 proves remarkably difficult to drift smoothly, often erupting into sudden, violent oversteer with minimal warning. Furthermore, any attempt to power through a corner typically results in a frustrating descent into terminal understeer. Even a highly aggressive Scandinavian flick maneuver fails to elicit the desired response; the car stubbornly plows straight ahead the moment the throttle is applied.
**The Quad-Motor Transformation: A New Dawn for the Ioniq 5**
Enter Elaphe’s radical reimagining of the same vehicle. This bespoke creation replaces Hyundai’s standard dual-motor setup with four independently driven in-wheel hub motors. Each motor is a powerhouse in its own right, capable of generating an astonishing 188 horsepower and a staggering 1,254 lb-ft of torque. Impressively, Elaphe has seamlessly integrated these motors with the vehicle’s original battery and power management systems. The result is a vehicle that maintains the familiar user experience of the Ioniq 5, right down to the intuitive state-of-charge display on the central touchscreen.
Getting behind the wheel and selecting ‘D’ for Drive is an experience as familiar as any standard Ioniq. However, the driving dynamics that follow are nothing short of revolutionary. In its default mode, the car remains commendably safe and easy to manage on the slick surface. Yet, where Hyundai’s standard safety systems react with abrupt power cuts when slip is detected and are often hesitant to reintroduce power, Elaphe’s system operates with a subtlety that is nothing short of remarkable. As you initiate a turn, the Ioniq gently reduces power in such a smooth, progressive manner that you can maintain full throttle through the entire corner.
Complementing this refined power management is a sophisticated application of regenerative braking. The system actively increases the recuperative braking force on the inside wheels, effectively helping the chassis rotate through the corner. Crucially, this is executed with such precision that the vehicle never ventures into the perilous territory of oversteer. Instead, a gentle, almost imperceptible understeer is introduced, providing a natural safeguard that gently dissuades novice drivers from exploring the absolute limits of adhesion.
**Ascending the Performance Ladder: Sport and Sport Plus**
For those seeking a more dynamic driving experience, Elaphe offers a tiered system of drive modes that progressively unlock the vehicle’s potential. Ascending to ‘Sport’ mode introduces a noticeable increase in throttle responsiveness and a greater degree of driver control. The car becomes more eager to engage, more willing to dance on the edge of adhesion.
Stepping up to ‘Sport Plus’ elevates the experience further. The vehicle is now content to execute moderate drifts, its throttle response significantly livelier. Yet, even as the tail begins to hang out beyond a few degrees, the system intervenes with a masterclass in control. It smoothly brings the car back into line, relying once again on the precise application of individual regenerative braking across the four wheels. This occurs without the jarring intrusion of traditional ABS systems, maintaining a seamless and fluid driving experience.
**Unleashing the Beast: Drift Mode**
Beyond these performance-oriented modes lies the ultimate expression of Elaphe’s engineering prowess: ‘Drift Mode.’ This mode represents a complete departure from the conventional, transforming the Ioniq 5 into an untamed beast of pure driving pleasure. While the underlying safety systems remain vigilant, they recede into the background, granting the driver almost complete autonomy. The formerly docile Ioniq 5 transforms into an absolute joy on the ice. The tail can be hung out dramatically through even the tightest corners, or the car can be powered sideways through high-speed sweeps with effortless grace.
The vehicle behaves with a clarity and predictability that is nothing short of astonishing. There are no abrupt power cuts, no clumsy interventions to disrupt the flow. If the driver momentarily falls behind in maintaining the drift, the system provides just the slightest assistance, a gentle nudge to prevent the tail from spinning completely out of control. Beyond this minimal guidance, the driver is free to orchestrate the movement of the 4,600-pound EV, pivoting and swinging it through the corners with an intuitive connection that feels telepathic.
**Addressing the Weight Conundrum: Engineering Excellence in Action**
During our technical briefing, Elaphe representatives revealed a surprising fact: despite the addition of four motors, their modified Ioniq 5 weighs only marginally more than the standard production model. The vehicle retains the original Hyundai brakes, though the suspension has been replaced with bespoke KW units meticulously calibrated to manage the increased weight distribution.
The concept of additional unsprung mass—with each motor weighing approximately 60 pounds—might intuitively suggest a detrimental impact on handling. However, Elaphe CEO Gorazd Gotovac dismisses this notion with confidence. “The top test drivers in the top performance OEMs would disagree,” he asserted. “From my perspective, that’s enough for me.”
Gotovac acknowledges that for high-end luxury vehicles, the increased unsprung mass could present challenges in ride quality. However, he maintains that these are not insurmountable obstacles, readily addressable through the application of more advanced suspension damping technologies. He firmly believes that the long-held assumption that in-wheel motors inherently compromise handling performance is simply a myth. “High-mu, low-mu, on tarmac and on ice, we prove that every day to OEMs,” he stated, underscoring Elaphe’s consistent real-world validation of their technology.
It is important to note that our evaluation took place on meticulously groomed test courses. The inherent bumpiness and unevenness of typical frozen lakes would undoubtedly present a different set of challenges. Nevertheless, the performance demonstrated under controlled conditions speaks volumes about the engineering excellence behind Elaphe’s innovation.
