White space, in the automotive industry, is marketing speak for identifying an untapped market opportunity within an established segment. A perfect example of this is the Ford Maverick, a compact pickup truck that became a runaway success. As midsize trucks grew in size and price, Ford recognized an opening for a smaller, more affordable, yet highly capable vehicle that filled the gap left by competitors.
Mercedes-Benz is hoping its all-new VLE-Class will be the next breakout hit in a category that is familiar to consumers in Europe and Asia but remains largely unexplored in North America—the luxury multi-passenger vehicle (MPV) segment. While some may initially view the VLE as a premium minivan, Mercedes-Benz envisions it as something far grander: a “grand limousine” for the modern era.
Globally, the VLE will be offered in two distinct sizes. The standard-wheelbase model measures 209.0 inches in length, making it approximately five inches longer than a Toyota Sienna minivan and three inches longer than Mercedes-Benz’s large GLS SUV. For the North American market, Mercedes-Benz will exclusively offer the long-wheelbase VLE, which stretches an impressive 215.9 inches—longer than a Cadillac Escalade. This extended length is primarily allocated to the wheelbase between the B-pillars, creating a dedicated zone for enhanced rear-seat luxury while maintaining ample passenger and cargo capacity.

VLE = Electric + All-Wheel Drive
At launch, anticipated for the 2028 model year, the Mercedes-Benz VLE will be available with two all-electric powertrain options. Both configurations will utilize a substantial 115-kWh (usable capacity) nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery pack, providing the foundation for the VLE’s electric performance.
The entry-level model, designated as the VLE300, will feature a single permanent magnet electric motor positioned at the front, powering the rear wheels. This setup delivers a robust 272 total system horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque. For those seeking enhanced performance and traction, the VLE400 4Matic variant incorporates dual electric motors—one powering the front axle and one at the rear—to provide full-time all-wheel drive. The VLE400 boasts a combined output of 409 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque, enabling a brisk 0-to-62 mph acceleration time of just 6.5 seconds.
Towing capability is also a strong suit for the VLE. Even the front-drive VLE300 can tow up to 3,300 pounds, while the all-wheel-drive VLE400 can handle loads of up to 5,500 pounds—sufficient for towing boats, campers, or utility trailers.
In terms of range, the VLE is engineered for long-distance travel. Mercedes-Benz estimates a maximum range of 404 miles on the generous European WLTP fuel economy cycle, a figure achieved through a combination of the large battery pack and an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.25. For the North American market, EPA testing will likely result in a real-world range closer to 360 miles on a full charge. The VLE’s 800-volt electrical architecture allows for ultra-fast DC charging, with Mercedes-Benz claiming that the vehicle can replenish approximately 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes when connected to a compatible high-speed charger.
Following the initial launch of the VLE300 and VLE400, Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce a more affordable version for the North American market, featuring an 80-kWh (usable capacity) lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. While the exact naming convention for this model is yet to be confirmed, it is certain that the entry-level VLE250, which will be sold in Europe and Asia, will not be offered in the United States.
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz will also introduce internal combustion engine (ICE) variants of the VLE, including gasoline, diesel, and hybrid options. These models will likely follow the same global powertrain strategy as the current V-Class, which the VLE is designed to replace worldwide. The North American market is expected to favor these gasoline and hybrid powertrains, reflecting regional preferences for traditional fuel sources.
Four Trim Levels, Seats for Eight
Mercedes-Benz USA will offer four distinct trim levels for the 2028 VLE: the standard configuration, two AMG sport appearance packages (AMG and AMG+), and the ultra-luxurious top-tier Exclusiv trim. This tiered approach aligns perfectly with the VLE’s positioning as a premium, customizable vehicle.
In other markets, the V-Class has traditionally served multiple purposes, from high-volume people-moving for fleet operators like hotels and tour companies to luxurious private transport. Mercedes-Benz previously attempted to capture the commercial segment in the U.S. with the Metris van, but the VLE targets a different clientele—one seeking premium amenities and flexibility.
Central to the VLE’s versatility is its innovative “roll and go” seating system. Two parallel tracks integrated into the floor of the VLE accommodate a variety of seating configurations that can be easily clicked and slid into place. With the standard setup of two front seats and two rear bench seats, the VLE can comfortably accommodate up to eight passengers.
The modular nature of the roll-and-go system allows for remarkable flexibility. Users can add, remove, or reposition individual seats to create configurations ranging from seven to as few as two passengers, with the rear seats entirely stowed for maximum cargo space. Each individual seat weighs approximately 45 pounds and features built-in wheels, making them easy to maneuver and store on a garage floor. Furthermore, the seats can be folded flat to facilitate loading bulky items, and second-row seats can be oriented to face rearward, a popular configuration in Europe that Mercedes-Benz confirms will be legal in the U.S. market.

While the flexible seating system clearly positions the VLE as a capable people mover for businesses, its primary target market consists of discerning, affluent travelers who demand luxury and entertainment. This focus becomes evident when exploring the VLE Exclusiv trim level.
For the ultimate in luxury and theater, the VLE Exclusiv features optional “grand comfort” rear seats upholstered in premium leather. The interior transformation is triggered by a simple voice command, such as, “Hey Mercedes, activate Cinema mode,” or by pressing a few buttons on a sleek, iPhone-like remote controller. Once activated, a retractable opaque sunshade glides across the panoramic glass roof, while mesh window shades automatically deploy to darken all rear windows. The showstopper, however, is a massive 31.3-inch widescreen display that descends from the headliner, which is ingeniously disguised as a structural buttress.
This high-definition widescreen boasts 8K resolution and is equipped with an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, enabling seamless video conferencing for business travelers. The display supports split-screen functionality, allowing one passenger to join a Zoom call while another streams their favorite movies or TV shows simultaneously.
