Woman Goes Nuts, Kicks Cop, Forced Into Prisoner Transport Van! The 2028 Mercedes-Benz VLE First Look: A New Era in Luxury People Moving Edward Loh • Writer • Manufacturer • Photographer • Mar 10, 2026 In the automotive landscape, there’s often a strategic opportunity in identifying whitespace—underserved segments ripe for disruption. Much like the Ford Maverick redefined the compact pickup market, Mercedes-Benz is embarking on a similar venture with its all-new, all-electric VLE-Class. This vehicle aims to revolutionize the luxury people-mover category, a segment that has long been dominated by traditional van designs in Europe and Asia but remains largely unexplored in North America. The 2028 Mercedes-Benz VLE represents a bold new direction, blending the practicality of a multi-passenger vehicle (MPV) with the opulence of a grand limousine. While its exterior proportions may evoke a familiar silhouette, the VLE’s innovative approach to space, technology, and passenger experience sets it apart from anything currently on the market. Distinguishing the VLE: A Tale of Two Sizes One of the most striking aspects of the VLE is its dimensional flexibility. Globally, Mercedes-Benz will offer the VLE in two distinct configurations: a standard-wheelbase model and an extended-wheelbase version. The short-wheelbase VLE measures 209.0 inches in length, positioning it slightly longer than the Toyota Sienna minivan and Mercedes-Benz’s own GLS SUV. However, North America will exclusively receive the long-wheelbase variant. This extended version stretches an impressive 215.9 inches from bumper to bumper, surpassing even the Cadillac Escalade in length. The additional inches are strategically integrated between the B-pillars, creating a distinct separation between the front and rear doors. This design choice is not merely aesthetic; it enables the creation of a dedicated rear cinema space while simultaneously preserving ample passenger and cargo volume—key priorities that define the VLE’s dual-purpose philosophy. Performance: The Electric Advantage At its launch, scheduled for mid-2027, the 2028 VLE will be available with two distinct all-electric powertrains, both utilizing an efficient 115-kWh usable nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack. The VLE300 variant will feature a single permanent-magnet electric motor powering the front wheels, delivering an estimated 272 total system horsepower. For those requiring enhanced performance and traction, the VLE400 4Matic introduces a dual-motor setup, providing all-wheel drive capabilities with a clutch system that can disconnect the rear axle when not needed. This configuration boosts the VLE400’s output to an impressive 409 horsepower.
Mercedes-Benz estimates that the all-wheel-drive VLE400 will accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in approximately 6.5 seconds, showcasing the vehicle’s surprising agility for its size. Towing capabilities are also robust, with front-drive models capable of hauling 3,300 pounds and all-wheel-drive variants handling up to 5,500 pounds—sufficient for transporting recreational equipment or smaller trailers. Aerodynamics and Efficiency The VLE’s impressive range is a testament to its aerodynamic optimization. With a claimed drag coefficient of 0.25, the VLE achieves a level of efficiency typically reserved for sedans, not large vans. On the European WLTP cycle, the VLE is rated for a maximum range of 404 miles. While U.S. EPA testing will likely yield slightly different results, preliminary estimates suggest an EPA-rated range of around 360 miles on a full charge. The vehicle’s 800-volt electrical architecture ensures rapid charging capabilities. Mercedes-Benz states that the VLE can replenish approximately 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes when connected to a high-speed DC fast charger, minimizing downtime and maximizing convenience for long-distance travelers. Powertrain Evolution Looking beyond the initial launch, Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce a more affordable VLE variant for the North American market, featuring an 80-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. While the specific nomenclature for this model is yet to be confirmed, it will not be the entry-level VLE250, which will continue to serve the more established MPV markets in Europe and Asia. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz will expand the VLE lineup with traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) options, including gasoline, diesel, and hybrid variants. This follows the successful strategy employed with the current V-Class models, which the VLE is globally replacing. North America is expected to be the primary market for these non-electric powertrains, catering to diverse consumer preferences and operational requirements. Configurability: The Roll and Go System A defining feature of the 2028 VLE is its highly flexible seating system, branded as “roll and go.” This innovative configuration utilizes two parallel tracks embedded in the floor, allowing for the seamless installation and removal of individual and bench seats. This versatility ensures that the VLE can be tailored to a wide range of needs, from high-capacity people hauling to intimate luxury transportation. Standard configurations can accommodate up to eight passengers, with two seats in the front and two three-person bench seats. By removing or repositioning individual seats, configurations can be adjusted to accommodate anywhere from seven to just two passengers. Each individual “roll and go” seat weighs approximately 45 pounds and features integrated wheels, enabling effortless mobility within the cabin or when loading/unloading. Versatility in Configuration The “roll and go” seats are not only easy to move but also designed to fold flat, optimizing cargo capacity when needed. Moreover, the second-row seats can be positioned to face rearward, a popular configuration in Europe that fosters social interaction among passengers. This option is confirmed to be legally permissible in the U.S. market, further enhancing the VLE’s appeal to families and business travelers alike. The flexibility of the seating system underscores Mercedes-Benz’s dual strategy for the VLE. While the company acknowledges the business potential for the vehicle as a premium people mover—much like the Metris van was intended to capture—the primary focus is on the high-end luxury segment. The VLE is engineered to meet the demands of discerning customers who seek comfort, technology, and exclusivity.
The Epitome of Luxury: The Exclusiv Trim The pinnacle of VLE luxury is embodied in the VLE Exclusiv trim level. This top-tier configuration transforms the vehicle into a true grand limousine, starting with the optional leather-wrapped “grand comfort” thrones in the rear cabin. The interior is a masterclass in ambient design, with a panoramic roof that can be darkened by mesh window shades that retract at the touch of a button. The centerpiece of the rear cabin is a breathtaking 31.3-inch widescreen display that descends from the headliner. This high-definition screen boasts 8K resolution and features an integrated 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, enabling seamless video conferencing for passengers on the go. The display supports split-screen functionality, allowing one passenger to stream entertainment while another participates in a video call—a perfect blend of productivity and leisure. Driving Dynamics: Precision in Motion Despite its substantial dimensions, the VLE is engineered for agility and precision. The vehicle comes standard with a rear-steering system that can adjust the angle of the rear wheels by up to 7 degrees. This innovative feature reduces the turning circle to an impressive 37.4 feet for the long-wheelbase model, making maneuverability in tight urban environments significantly easier. During preliminary testing, the rear-steering system proved remarkably effective, delivering a sense of control and responsiveness that belies the vehicle’s size. The VLE’s commanding seating position, combined with the precision of the rear-wheel steering, creates a driving experience that is both confident and comfortable. While the final configuration for the U.S. market is yet to be determined, it is highly probable that rear-steering will be standard on most, if not all, VLE models offered in the States. Advanced Suspension Technology Complementing the VLE’s dynamic capabilities is the optional “Airmatic” air suspension system. This advanced system offers 1.5 inches of adjustable ride height and features intelligent damping technology that optimizes ride quality and efficiency. Mercedes-Benz has integrated real-time mapping data into the suspension control, allowing the VLE to proactively adjust its ride height based on upcoming road conditions. This system can anticipate frequent drop-off locations, such as VIP red carpet events, automatically lowering the vehicle for easier passenger access. This seamless integration of technology and comfort exemplifies the VLE’s commitment to delivering a best-in-class luxury experience. Intelligent Convenience Features The 2028 VLE is equipped with a suite of intelligent features designed to enhance convenience and safety. For parking scenarios, the vehicle’s memory function allows it to recall the last 500 feet of travel, enabling it to automatically reverse itself along the same path—invaluable for navigating complex parking structures. Access to the rear cargo area is facilitated by a powered tailgate. However, recognizing that the full arc of the tailgate may not always be feasible in confined spaces, the VLE also features a flip-up rear window. This allows for items to be loaded or unloaded from the rear cargo area even when the tailgate cannot be fully opened, providing added flexibility for passengers with gear or luggage. The large tailgate opening also serves as a convenient place to hang wetsuits, a thoughtful detail for those who enjoy watersports. Technological Integration
