Adult son who spent ‘majority of his time playing video games’ killed dad for telling him to get a job: Deputies

A man who spent the majority of his time playing video games admitted that he shot his father and mother after his dad told him to get a job, say deputies in Polk County, Florida.
Joseph David Voigt, 23, is currently sitting in the Orange County Jail. In a news release, deputies said their police counterparts in the city of Bartow arrived at the Voigt home Saturday night. The slain victim, Marvin Voigt, 63, was dead in the driveway from apparent gunshot wound. His wife, a 58-year-old woman, was also injured. She told cops that their son had shot them and fled.

“She is currently in critical condition, but stable,” deputies said.
After the suspect allegedly ran away from the scene, Bartow cops reached out to their sheriff’s office counterparts for help. Authorities put out a BOLO for Polk County and the surrounding area. Eventually, law enforcement tracked down suspect Voigt’s car in Orlando on International Drive. Local cops did a traffic stop, arresting him. He was booked into the Orange County Jail on Sunday and awaits extradition in the murder and attempted murder case.
“PCSO deputies spoke to Voigt and he admitted to shooting both his father and mother,” deputies wrote. “He said his father was upset with him about spending the majority of his time playing video games and ‘riding his ass’ about making something of himself and getting a job. Joseph Voigt’s criminal history includes arrests for firing a weapon in a residential area, and battery.”
“Thanks to the rapid response of the Bartow Police Department this violent and dangerous suspect was quickly apprehended,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement. “They asked for our assistance and we were happy to oblige. My detectives will continue their thorough investigation into this crime to ensure Voigt will face the full consequences of his actions.”

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless shooting,” Bartow police Chief Stephen Walker said. “We sincerely appreciate the assistance provided by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Orlando Police Department in this case, which led to the quick arrest of the suspect, Joseph Voigt.”
