25th Amendment explained and how it could remove Donald Trump from office

Some Democrats have called for Donald Trump to be removed from office through the amendment

With Donald Trump adamant on his intentions to annexe Greenland, some Democrats have posed the possibility of the 25th Amendment being invoked.

The president has spoke about taking over the Danish territory since he returned to office this time last year, claiming the US ‘needs’ to own Greenland ‘now’ for the sake of national security.

The move has been condemned by many European leaders, leading to Trump threatening to impose a ten percent tariff in eight European countries, starting February.

Come June, this is set to rise to 25 percent should a deal for the ‘complete and total purchase of Greenland’ fail to be reached.

People are worried World War Three could break out if Trump attempts to take military action on Greenland, with some of the president’s critics calling for the 25th Amendment to be invoked to get Trump out of the White House.

What is the 25th Amendment?

The amendment was proposed by federal lawmakers following the assassination of John F Kennedy in 1963.

Section 4 of the 25th Amendment permits the transfer of authority to the vice president without actually removing the president in situ.

Most likely the president, Trump in this case, would block such a move – though Congress does have the power to mandate the transfer of power through a two-thirds vote in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Under the provision of section four, the vice president, JD Vance, and a majority of the 15-member Cabinet must jointly declare the president unfit to perform their duties.

The 25th Amendment has never been used to remove a sitting president, though it has been invoked for two VP’s in the past.

What has been said about invoking the Amendment to remove Trump?

California Democrat Maxine Waters called for aggressive steps to ensure that Trump could be removed from office last year.

The representative said: “He wants to control the Fed. He wants to be able to determine interest rates. He wants to be able to have the people on the governing board that will do exactly as they are told. This is extraordinarily dangerous. This is the makings of a dictator who is trying to control the entire economy.”

The politician argued that Trump and his administration could ‘upend the entire economy’ and called for the implementation of Article 25.

Fellow Democrat Ed Markey, recently took to X and simply wrote: “Invoke the 25th Amendment,” amid a New York Times report that Trump has pushed on with his plan to annexe Greenland after failing to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

In a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump made a concerning threat about no longer thinking ‘purely of peace’, even stating that he is going after an allied nation because ‘your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 wars PLUS’.Featured Image Credit: Getty Images/Tom Brenner

Donald Trump has spoken many times about acquiring Greenland

JD Vance says the president isn’t messing around when he says he wants to acquire Greenland.

America occupied Greenland (an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark) when Germany occupied Denmark during the Second World War. Apparently, the US was reluctant to leave the country after the war, and an offer was made in 1947 to buy it.

Several decades on, and Trump wants Americans in Greenland once more — but the country is far from willing to give up that easily.

The president supposedly wants to buy the country peacefully, but that hasn’t stopped the administration from making military threats as well.

In recent days, Greenland sent a defiant message to the president, as the country’s premier, Jens Frederik Nielsen, said: “Threats, pressure, and talk of annexation do not belong anywhere between friends.

“That’s not how you talk to a people who have repeatedly shown responsibility, stability and loyalty. This is enough.”

Greenland’s residents are equally as unenthusiastic about Trump’s plans, and they insisted that the country isn’t a business the president can simply buy.

Reportedly, Mark Rubio is set to meet with Greenland’s leaders this week or next, and Vice President JD Vance has urged those in Europe to take the POTUS seriously.

“My advice to European leaders and anybody else would be to take the president of the United States seriously,” Vance said during an appearance at a White House briefing on January 8.

Going on to speak about the media’s supposed ‘overreactions’, Vance continued: “What has he said about Greenland? Set to the side the crazy overreactions that I’ve seen from the press and from certain people in Europe.

“Number one: Greenland is really important, not just to America’s missile defence but to the world’s missile defence.

“Number two: We know that there are hostile adversaries that have shown a lot of interest in that particular territory… So what we’re asking our European friends to do is to take the security of that landmass more seriously, because if they’re not, the United States is going to have to do something about it.

“What that is, I’ll leave that to the president as we continue to engage in diplomacy with our European friends.”

People have now reacted to Vance’s comments with concern, and one person went as far as calling the VP ‘more dangerous than Trump’.

Meanwhile, another worried individual said: “EVERY DAMN DAY is like a recurring nightmare with these people. It’s exhausting….”

People are calling Donald Trump ‘pathetic’ after latest ’embarrassing’ interview

Viewers are not impressed with Donald Trump’s latest interview with some even dubbing the president’s latest comments as ‘pathetic’ and ’embarrassing’.

Trump sat down with Fox News’ Sean Hannity for an interview that aired on Thursday (January 8), where he discussed a range of different topics, including the recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

“We went in, we took Maduro out. Amazingly, nobody was killed,” Trump said, adding the operation was an ‘amazing attack’.

“We’ve knocked out 97 percent of the drugs coming in by water. There are almost no boats,” he added.

The interview also saw the Nobel Peace Prize come up after Trump said on numerous occasions prior to the award being handed out to María Corina Machado that he deserved to claim it.

“She won the Nobel Peace Prize when she accepted that Peace Prize, she dedicated it to you,” Hannity said, before asking the president: “Do you have any plans to meet with her, and would you accept the Nobel Prize she wants to hand to you?”

Trump replied with: “Well, I understand she’s coming in next week sometime, and I look forward to saying hello to her, and I’ve heard that she wants to do that; that would be a great honor.”

One social media user said Trump ‘will embarrass Americans’, while another described Trump’s response as ‘pathetic’.

Meanwhile, as per the Mirror, another X user described Trump’s ‘obsession’ with the Nobel Peace Prize as ‘baffling’.

Hannity spoke with the Nobel Peace Prize winner on Monday (January 5), with the journalist asking her if she would give the award to Trump following recent events.

“Well, it hasn’t happened yet, but I certainly love to be able to personally tell him that we believe the Venezuelan people, because this is a prize of the Venezuelan people, certainly want to give it to him and share it with him,” Machado said.

The US has claimed that the action taken against Venezuela in the past week was to push back against drug trafficking.

Trump has also escalated his rhetoric around the US taking Greenland from Denmark, claiming that it is in the interests of ‘national security’, a move that’s been widely condemned by European leaders and the rest of the world.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been charged with a series of criminal charges, which include: narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive Devices against the United States.

The Venezuelan leader has pleaded not guilty while insisting he’s ‘still president’.

How Congress can stop Trump invading Greenland amid fears of military takeover

How Congress can stop Trump invading Greenland amid fears of military takeover

There’s been talk of invoking the War Powers Resolution Act – but what is it?

Ellie Kemp

Ellie Kemp

As US-Greenland tensions escalate, there is one way Congress could stop Trump from taking over the Denmark-governed territory.

Since Trump returned to office last January, he’s had his sights firmly set on acquiring Greenland, the world’s largest island.

He claims the US ‘need’ to own Greenland ‘now’ for the sake of national security. But not everyone agrees…

Advert

The island, located between North America and the Arctic, is strategically positioned for early warning detection of missile attacks. However, the Denmark-owned territory is not for sale – though that’s not exactly deterred Trump from wanting to invade the area.

In response, Trump has threatened to impose a 10 percent tariff in eight European countries, starting February.

This is set to rise to 25 percent come June should a deal for the ‘complete and total purchase of Greenland’ fail to be reached.

While people are worried World War Three could break out if Trump attempts to take-over the island, there is something Congress could do to throw a spanner in his works.

Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen has called on the US government to invoke the War Powers Resolution, as per ABC News.

“We could, for example, cut off any funds that could be used for military purposes with respect to Greenland; we could take action under the War Powers Resolution,” he said.

Also known as the War Powers Act, the congressional resolution is designed to ‘limit the US president’s ability to initiate or escalate military actions abroad,’ the Nixon Library explains.

It was passed in 1973 during the final years of the Vietnam War, after Congress grew alarmed by how deeply the US had been drawn into the conflict without a formal declaration of war.

It requires the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and forbids armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days, with a further 30-day withdrawal period, without congressional authorization or a declaration of war by the US.

So, it is meant to stop presidents from starting open-ended wars on their own. It allows them to act quickly in emergencies, but Congress has the final say if the fighting is going to last.

However, the Act can be vetoed by the president.

Congress then needs a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate to override said veto, which Democrats almost certainly don’t have.

So unless a significant number of Republicans break with Trump, the resolution actually won’t legally stop him.

Van Hollen added: “A lot of our Republican colleagues talk big until it comes time to vote. We saw that just this past week, where two Republican senators who had voted in favor of moving forward the War Powers Resolution on Venezuela backed off.

“So they have to stop giving Donald Trump a blank check.”Featured Image Credit: Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images

Greenland’s leader sends blunt message to Trump ahead of White House talks

Greenland’s prime minister Jens-Frederick Nielsen revealed which country it would ‘choose’ to side with

Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has hit back at Donald Trump’s plans to ‘own’ the territory.

Last year, Trump’s first speech in a joint session of Congress saw him deliver a bit of a conflicting ‘message’ to the ‘incredible people of Greenland‘.

Despite the US ‘strongly support[ing]’ the territory’s ‘right to determine’ its ‘own future,’ the 47th President of the US resolved ‘one way or the other,’ the US was ‘going to get’ Greenland.

Advert

Earlier this month, Trump doubled down on his supposed invitation to Greenland, and the island has since responded to his generous offer.

He previously explained the US ‘need[s]’ Greenland ‘for national security and even international security’.

On Friday (January 9), while aboard Air Force One, Trump added: “If we don’t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor.”

The White House has suggested buying Greenland – with Trump describing it as ‘essentially a real estate deal,’ in 2019 – but the US also hasn’t ruled out using force to annex it.

And Greenland’s prime minister, Nielsen, reflected on the conundrum during a joint news conference with Denmark’s prime minister.

Warning Greenland is ‘facing a geopolitical crisis,’ Nielsen said: “If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark.”

Making ‘one thing […] clear to everyone,’ Nielsen emphasized: “Greenland does not want to be owned by the United States. Greenland does not want to be governed by the United States. Greenland does not want to be part of the United States.”

It didn’t take long for Trump to hit back at Nielsen, shockingly arguing he’d have to ‘disagree’.

Yesterday (January 14), Trump reflected on Nielsen’s comments, stating, as quoted by the BBC: “That’s their problem, I disagree with him… That’s going to be a big problem for him.”

However, it could also spell a big problem for Trump should the US seize Greenland by force, with members of NATO having previously warned against such a move.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark slammed the ‘completely unacceptable pressure from [its] closet ally’.

Trump later responded in classic threatening fashion: “If it affects NATO, then it affects NATO. But, you know, they need us much more than we need them, I will tell you that right now.”

“Greenland should make the deal because Greenland does not want to see Russia or China take over,” he added. “Greenland, basically their defense is two dogsleds.”Featured Image Credit: Kristian Tuxen Ladegaard Berg/NurPhoto via Getty Images
