Grandmother Sentenced to 10 Years for Assaulting Four-Year-Old Grandson
Polokwane, South Africa – The Morebeng Regional Court has sentenced a 43-year-old grandmother from Botlokwa to 10 years in prison for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on her four-year-old grandson. Despite pleading not guilty, the court found the accused guilty after hearing testimony from multiple witnesses, including neighbours and the accused’s former boyfriend. The court heard that in 2023, the victim, who struggled with bedwetting, was repeatedly assaulted by his grandmother with a tree stick. The child sustained multiple scars on his body and face. In a particularly horrific act, the accused also attempted to cut the child’s private parts to stop him from wetting the bed. The abuse was reported by concerned neighbours and the accused’s then-boyfriend, leading to her arrest.
In aggravation of sentence, State Advocate Andrew Kgatla emphasized the brutality of the accused’s actions, stating that she had inflicted lifelong trauma on a child who was supposed to be in her care. He further argued that the victim lived in constant fear, knowing that any instance of bedwetting could lead to further physical harm. The state contended that there were no substantial or compelling circumstances to justify a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence.
Welcoming the sentence, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Limpopo, Advocate Ivy Thenga, reaffirmed the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) zero-tolerance stance on child abuse. She also commended Advocate Kgatla and all stakeholders involved in securing justice for the young victim.

KEYSVILLE, Ga. (WRDW/Gray News) – A Georgia grandmother was arrested after her 14-year-old grandson accused her of getting drunk and beating him almost every night. Deputies say the teenager’s grandfather corroborated his story.
Patricia Green was arrested Sunday and charged with cruelty to children in the first-degree.
Deputies with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office spoke with a Burke County High School counselor around 2:20 p.m. Friday. A 14-year-old male student, who was in the office with the counselor, had come forward with a complaint of child abuse.
Deputies took pictures of the victim’s injuries and notified investigators. The report says the victim had a busted lip, a laceration to the top of his head and bruising to his left arm from his elbow to his forehand.
In an interview, the 14-year-old told an investigator his grandmother beats him almost every night. The victim said the laceration to the top of his head was due to her striking him on the top of the head with a dust pan several days prior, officials say.
The victim said his grandmother often drinks and got drunk the last night before becoming physical with him, busting his lip, according to deputies. He could not recall when he got the bruises on his arm but was consistent in alleging Green “beats him” nightly.
According to the report, the victim said his grandfather does attempt to intervene; however, Green then gets physical with him. He said when his grandfather defends either of them and strikes Green back, she calls the police, noting that his grandfather had been previously arrested, officials say.
After the interview, the victim was released into the custody of his grandfather.
Later the same day, investigators spoke to the victim’s grandfather at his home. The report says investigators asked him about the teenager’s injuries, to which he responded, “Whatever he told you is the truth.”
The grandfather said Green drinks heavily and becomes irate, due to not receiving child support for the 14-year-old. He said Green then takes it out on the victim, and this occurs almost nightly, according to the report.
The grandfather said he has attempted to step in and defend the victim but has been physically assaulted by Green, as well and subsequently arrested when law enforcement arrived, according to officials.
When asked about the laceration to the juvenile’s head, the grandfather responded, “The dust pan.”
According to investigators, the grandfather said there is another male juvenile in the residence, but Green does not abuse him and only takes her anger out on the victim.
Due to the juvenile’s parents not being able to raise him, the grandfather said he and Green have full custody, officials say.
The report says the 14-year-old’s grandfather felt he was not getting any help for him and encouraged him to go speak with his counselor.
The sheriff’s office obtained warrants for Green and arrested her. She is employed by Doctors Hospital but has been suspended pending the investigation.
