First deployment of National Guard to Memphis expected in next two weeks, MPD chief says
Memphis Commercial Appeal
Sept. 30, 2025, 8:19 p.m. CT
- Memphis officials expect the National Guard to be deployed to the city within the next two weeks.
- The Guard members will assist with “non-public safety issues,” according to the Memphis Police Chief.
- Officials do not expect widespread checkpoints but will announce any that are planned.
Memphis officials expect the first deployment of the National Guard to occur sometime in the next two weeks, said Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis in a Sept. 30 town hall.
Davis said officials have not been able to get the number of National Guard members that will be sent to the city, but that they’re hoping the Guard will work with them on “non-public safety issues” in the city.
“That’s about as much as I can say right now until they actually arrive,” Davis said.
The event, held at The Healing Center church, gave residents the chance to ask questions of Memphis Mayor Paul Young and other city officials. Officials spoke about the deployment of the National Guard and a dozen other federal agencies to Memphis as part of the Memphis Safe Task Force.
Davis said she was part of a Sept. 30 briefing to learn more about the structure of the visit, but didn’t get any new information on the National Guard.
“We’re kind of building the plane on the runway,” she said.
What will the National Guard presence look like in Memphis?
After the event, Young said he wasn’t expecting to see a lot of checkpoints, despite speculation after federal authorities set up checkpoints in Washington, D.C.
“When we had our dialogs with the feds a week or so ago, we let them know that that’s not something that we do a lot of, and when we do do it, it has to be announced,” Young said. “So if it happens, it will be announced, just as we do any checkpoints that happen in the city of Memphis and in the state of Tennessee.”
Young said officials will soon be a part of daily briefings and will likely hold a weekly public briefing to communicate any updates to the public.
Young also addressed United States Attorney General Pam Bondi’s comments in a Sept. 30 Fox News interview that Young was “cooperating” with the deployment.
“It’s not something that I asked for, it’s not something that I thought is the best way to reduce crime, but the governor and the president have made a decision,” Young said. “We are not in the same position as other cities with Democratic governors that have opposed the presence of those federal entities coming into the community, and so my goal is to make sure that this is a win for our city, given that they’re going to be here. I want to make sure that we are aligning how they come into our community.”
Bondi also said she and U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth would be visiting Memphis.
Young said if he spoke with them, he would discuss their goals for the engagement and how the deployment could build upon the success the city has achieved, citing “historic reductions in crime.”

Young said he had his first on-the-ground engagement with the federal agencies on Sept. 29.
“I think we’re still working through how they’re going to fold into some of the things that are working within MPD, and so we do have every reason to believe that they’re going to be collaborative and work with our police department throughout this process,” he said.
