Guy Gets Tackled in the Middle of the Nike Store
East L.A. Nike store hit by grab-and-dash thieves, the latest in series of daytime robberies
A group of thieves were captured on video stealing boxes of shoes and other items from a Nike store in East Los Angeles on Sunday, the latest in a string of smash-and-grab thefts carried out during regular business hours.
A man and woman can be seen scrambling with a handful of shoe boxes in a video posted to the Citizen app and reported by KTLA-TV. The theft was reported to the East Los Angeles sheriff’s station at 5:36 p.m. and roughly $1,000 in miscellaneous shoes were stolen, according to Deputy Maria Lucero with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Lucero could not confirm if any arrests were made in the incident at the Nike Community Store on Whittier Boulevard but said a detective will likely be assigned to the incident.

The incident seems to be the latest in a series of flash-mob robberies, which involve a group of people who ransack a business, often with little attempt to conceal their identities.
The daytime theft in East Los Angeles comes just one day after 30 to 50 people participated in a robbery at the Westfield Topanga Shopping Center. Dozens of people ransacked the Nordstrom store on Saturday and used bear spray to target security workers while they made off with the goods, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The suspects left in sedans without license plates. Police estimated losses to be between $60,000 and $100,000.
There were no injuries, according to a customer service representative who was unable to provide further details Saturday.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the Nordstrom robbery “absolutely unacceptable.”
“Those who committed these acts and acts like it in neighboring areas must be held accountable,” she said in a statement. “The Los Angeles Police Department will continue to work to not only find those responsible for this incident but to prevent these attacks on retailers from happening in the future.”
In a similar incident, another group of thieves who robbed the same Nordstrom attacked a security guard with bear spray in November 2021.
At the Americana at Brand in Glendale, 30 to 40 people stormed the Yves Saint Laurent store on Aug. 8. The group drove away in about 20 vehicles with roughly $300,000 worth of merchandise, according to the Glendale Police Department.
On Aug. 1, the Gucci store at the Westfield Century City Mall was also hit by at least nine people.

🚔 Police called after smash and grab
💰 Stolen goods worth six figures, owner says
JERSEY CITY — Burglars targeted a store that sells high-priced, rare sneakers in a smash-and-grab incident caught on surveillance video late last week.
Jersey City police responded to the call about a burglary very early Friday around 4:30 a.m.
The business at 280 Newark Avenue, called The Loop, stocks hard-to-find sneakers that roughly range in price from $100 to $400 a pair, as seen on the store’s Instagram feed.

Total value of the items taken was still being determined, according to police.
The shop owner told Eyewitness News ABC 7 New York that the stolen merchandise could top six figures — at more than $100,000.
Suspects fled the scene in a vehicle described as a dark-colored luxury SUV, partly seen in video footage shared with ABC 7 New York.

Sneaker stores in NJ, NY growing target
Pricey sneakers and athletic gear have been a common target for burglars around New Jersey and New York, in recent years.
A sneaker store in Bloomfield was struck in January, as burglars used cinderblocks to smash a glass door and made off with an undisclosed amount of merchandise, Montclair Local reported.
The same month on Long Island, a stolen BMW was used to ram a storefront, where burglars grabbed roughly $50,000 in stolen sneakers and other goods, according to NBC New York.
In November, thieves in Bergen County snatched about $7,000 in Nike pants, sweatshirts and jackets from a store in Moonachie along Route 46, Daily Voice reported.
Several years ago, a different Jersey City sneaker store was hit by burglars, NJ.com reported, as they broke in and stole a total of about $40,000 in merchandise and cash from a safe.

A company is building homes in the Inland Empire that can withstand some of the most massive earthquakes and wildfires. Here’s how it works.
EAST LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Six people have been taken into custody in connection with the brazen theft of $1,000 worth of merchandise from a Nike store in East Los Angeles, authorities said Friday.
A shopper recorded two suspects stealing from a Nike store in broad daylight on Sunday at the store on Whittier Boulevard.
Two adults and four juveniles were later apprehended, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told ABC7.
In a social media post, the department said the suspects were taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers on Wednesday afternoon. Photos published on Instagram show the red SUV that was pulled over on the 710 Freeway.

The identities of the adults were not immediately released, and the names of the other suspects were withheld because they are minors.
The footage shows two suspects running in with trash bags and taking off with about $1,000 worth of shoes and other items. No injuries were reported.
The Sheriff’s Department said this particular store has been targeted weekly.
Alhambra resident Candice Lopez, who was shopping at the store on Tuesday, said she witnessed a similar incident recently, where she saw thieves run off from the business with bags full of stolen merchandise.
“They booked it and went down the alley, and I’m like wow, that’s crazy,” she said. “It sucks because you know, us, we work hard for our money to pay for stuff that we need for our kids. I’m a single mother, so it’s hard. And then to see people do stuff like that, it pisses me off.”
The incident occurred after about 30 people stole more than $300,000 in merchandise from the Nordstrom store inside Westfield Topanga mall. Dressed in disguises and moving quickly, they all escaped.
Mob-style smash-and-grab robbery at Nordstrom store inside Topanga mall leaves shoppers on edge

Shocking video captured a mob-style smash-and-grab robbery at a mall in Topanga and police are now searching for up to 30 suspects involved.
The LAPD said the department is in contact with other law enforcement departments, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, to see if any of these mob-style robberies are connected. Authorities said it was too soon in the investigation to say if they are linked.
“Whether or not they’re linked, they are organized, and my sense is that they are linked,” said L.A. Police Commissioner Steve Soboroff at a Los Angeles Police Commission meeting Tuesday. Another point discussed at the meeting was a possible reward that was in the works for information leading to arrest in these cases.
Data from the Los Angeles Police Department shows in 2022, only about a quarter of such robberies led to an arrest. Since then, leaders in law enforcement and business communities are saying enough is enough.
