France still Number One? World’s most popular travel destinations
Have you ever wondered where people are most keen to travel to abroad, either for holidays or business?
We have been looking at the most popular travel destinations worldwide since 1996 with some interesting trends.
And all eyes will be on France by the end of the year to see if it can retain its global tourism crown post-pandemic, according to our research.
Whether you have a taste for visiting the Eiffel Tower, seeing works of art at The Louvre or enjoy skiing in the French Alps, it appears the world has a continuing love affair with France.
The data, which compared countries for international visitor numbers every year until 2019, showed France was the most popular destination for all but five years in that 24 year period. America (USA) briefly led the table, overtaking France from 1996-97 and 2013-16.
But what does the future hold?
2022 is a critical year for the tourism industry with international travel bans relaxing in many countries with the easing of the covid pandemic. Millions of people will be travelling abroad for a holiday this summer for the first time in two or three years and it will be fascinating to see which countries continue to attract the most tourists.
France has been ever present in the top two travel destinations since 1996, Turkey is now established in the top ten.
Will France still be the most popular destination by the end of 2022, or will another country hold more appeal with so many people keen to travel abroad and explore?
Both America and France led the rest by some distance for the majority of the years between 1996 and 2019, except for the last couple of years with Spain taking second place ahead of America in 2018 and 2019.
Visitor figures for both America and France have regularly topped 70m – in some years doubling the total that the third most popular nation has welcomed. In the two years following the Twin Towers attacks, visitor numbers to America dropped markedly to around 60m, while France recorded around 74m – the biggest gap between the two countries during the research period.
Yet in 2018, America, then back in top spot, recorded an incredible 96m visitors in one year – the most recorded by any one country in the records.
In 2019, the top three saw France record 90m international visitors, followed by Spain, newly into second place with 83m visitors and America third with 79m visitors.
There are some other interesting trends which has seen the top six most popular destinations largely unchanged through the last two and a half decades. Italy, UK and China have joined France, America and Spain as the most sought after destinations.
In 2003, Russia briefly climbed above the UK into sixth place, but has largely fallen out of the top ten rankings in the last decade. The UK itself slipped to ninth in the top ten charts by 2019.
Canada, Poland, Germany and Mexico have all enjoyed several years making up the top ten top travel destinations, while in more recent years, Turkey has also been very popular, climbing to sixth place in 2009.
Malaysia and Thailand have also appeared in the top ten during the last five or so years, and Ukraine also made an entry on the top ten board in 2008 with 25m visitors.
Visitor numbers have also been on the increase across the board. There were 299m people travelling to the top ten destinations in 1996. That had increased to 588m by 2019. Also in 1995, just two countries recorded more than 60m visitors – this became five by 2019.

Y a finales de este ano, todas las miradas estaran puestas en Francia para confirmar si ha mantenido la posicion de lider en terminos de turismo mundial, según nuestro estudio.
Ya sea para visitar la Torre Eiffel, contemplar obras de arte en el Louvre o disfrutar del esqui en los Alpes franceses, lo cierto es que parece que el mundo sigue enamorado de Francia.
Los datos, que comparan el número de visitantes extranjeros que recibian los paises cada ano hasta 2019, muestran que, a excepcion de un parentesis de cinco anos, Francia siempre ha sido el destino preferido durante ese periodo de 24 anos. Estados Unidos supero a este pais europeo entre los anos 1996-1997 y 2013-2016.
Pero ¿que nos depara el futuro?
El 2022 es un ano critico para el sector turistico, una vez que las restricciones para viajar a nivel internacional se han relajado a medida que la pandemia de la COVID-19 ha ido remitiendo. Millones de personas viajaran al extranjero de vacaciones este verano por primera vez en dos o tres anos y sera fascinante ver que paises siguen atrayendo mas turistas.
Francia ha estado siempre presente entre los dos primeros destinos turisticos desde 1996 y Turquia se encuentra entre los diez primeros.
¿Seguira siendo Francia el destino mas visitado a finales de 2022, o habra otro pais mas atractivo, con tanta gente ansiosa por viajar al extranjero y descubrir otros paises?
Tanto Estados Unidos como Francia han mantenido una cierta distancia con los demas paises durante la mayor parte de los anos comprendidos entre 1996 y 2019, a excepcion de los dos últimos, en los que Espana ha ocupado el segundo lugar por delante de Estados Unidos en 2018 y 2019.
Las cifras de visitantes que reciben Estados Unidos y Francia superan, por lo general, los 70 millones de personas. Ademas, algunos anos duplican el total de turistas que recibe la tercera nacion mas popular. En los dos anos que siguieron a los atentados de las Torres Gemelas, el número de visitantes que recibio Estados Unidos descendio notablemente y se situo en torno a los 60 millones, mientras que Francia registro unos 74 millones, lo que supone la mayor diferencia entre ambos paises durante el periodo de estudio.
Sin embargo, en 2018, Estados Unidos, que entonces volvia a ocupar el primer puesto, registro la increible cifra de 96 millones de visitantes en un ano, la mayor alcanzada por un pais.
En 2019, de los tres primeros paises, Francia registro 90 millones de visitantes extranjeros, seguido de Espana, que paso a ocupar el segundo lugar con 83 millones de visitantes, y de Estados Unidos, que ocupo el tercer lugar con 79 millones.
Hay otras tendencias interesantes según las cuales los seis destinos mas populares se han mantenido practicamente sin cambios en las últimas dos decadas y media. Italia, Reino Unido y China se han unido a Francia, Estados Unidos y Espana como los destinos mas demandados.
En 2003, Rusia supero brevemente al Reino Unido y se situo en la sexta posicion, pero en la última decada ha experimentado una caida y ya no se encuentra entre los diez primeros paises. En 2019, Reino Unido cayo al noveno puesto en las listas de los diez primeros.
Canada, Polonia, Alemania y Mexico llevan varios anos formando parte de los diez principales destinos turisticos, mientras que en los últimos anos Turquia se ha convertido en un destino muy popular y alcanzo el sexto puesto en 2009.
