EDENTON, N.C. (WTKR) – A North Carolina woman’s morning routine took a surprising and scary turn.

Marie Steinburg said she left her house for work, headed to her car and found a man police were looking for in her back seat.

“I kept backing up little by little by little because I thought, I don’t know what this man is going to do,” she said.

Steinburg knew that an inmate had escaped from the Chowan County Detention Center Sunday night, but she never expected to find him inside her car as she was leaving the house to go to work Monday morning.

“I headed out the door, and I clicked the unlock, and it must have scared the guy, because the next thing I know, I saw something moving in my back seat,” she said.

Steinburg was just yards away from 23-year-old Charles Edward Babb, who the Edenton Police Department warned was considered potentially armed and dangerous, when she said he jumped out of her car.

She said she stayed calm and began to talk to him.

“He looked so cold and so scared. I thought, ‘Well, I’m not going to try and provoke him. I’m going to try and be very, very nice and pull the mother act on him.’ You know, like I would with my own kids,” Steinburg said.

Steinburg said she offered to grab Babb a coat, but just moments later, he took off down the driveway. That is when she ran back inside her home, called up to her husband and dialed 911.

“I got in as fast as I could. I was shaking like a leaf, and I could barely get the key in the lock, but I did,” she said.

Her husband, Bob Steinburg, said when his wife got back inside the house, he could hear the tension and alarm in her voice.

“And so I said, ‘What’s going on? What is it?’ She said, ‘There’s somebody in my car, and I think it’s the guy that escaped last night, because he had a jumpsuit on, an orange jumpsuit,’” he said.

The Edenton Police Department captured Babb shortly afterward.

Bob Steinburg said he could not say enough about how his wife handled the situation.

“I was very proud of my wife. I mean, the way she handled it as I’m hearing about this now from her and others that she really did a great job,” he said.

The Steinburgs are thankful that the situation turned out like it did for everyone involved.

“Someone else said to me, I thought this was very interesting. They had mentioned that, ‘Well, God must have been watching over Marie yesterday’. And I said, ‘You’re absolutely right. God was watching over Marie yesterday.’ But you know something? I think God was watching out over this young man as well, to have him come here,” Bob Steinburg said.

From now on, Steinburg said she will make sure to lock her car.

“Oh let me tell you, if I don’t, he [my husband] is going to. It’s one of those things that we learned,” she said.

Dexter: Resurrection’ Needs To Address These 9 Things in Season 2 (or Else)

Dexter wearing a black hoodie, holding his father's face in Dexter: Resurrection.

Christine is a freelance writer for Collider with two decades of experience covering all types of TV shows and movies spanning every genre. With a particular affinity for dramas, true crime, sitcoms, and thrillers, if it’s a top TV show, Christine has likely watched it and is eager to share her thoughts. When she’s not furiously writing away, you can find her enjoying the next binge obsession with a glass of wine in front of the TV.

Dexter: Resurrection ended in such a satisfying way, fans might be fine if the show only lasted this one season, albeit sadly so. Realistically, diehards want more and aren’t ready to say goodbye to the favorite vigilante serial killer character just yet. A second season would be welcome and there’s plenty it could address.

Assuming the show does continue as initially intended to run for more seasons, there are a lot of things that could take center stage from the get-go. These storylines weren’t necessarily left hanging. But there are unanswered questions that could be handled for the plot to move forward in the best way possible.

Does Anyone Go After Charley?

Uma Thurman as Charley Brown looking ahead in Dexter: Resurrection.

After Dexter (Michael C. Hall) reveals to Charley (Uma Thurman) that Leon (Peter Dinklage) had been keeping a file on her with all the evidence he needed to take her down should she ever defect, she was furious. She promptly quit and blackmailed him into continuing to care for her mother, or else she’d reveal his dirty secret without care if it took her down with him.

Charley is last seen hurrying her mother into the car, planning to head back home to Albany and away from the wretched city of New York. While Leon won’t be a problem for her anymore, the police will still be looking into and for him, since they don’t know he’s dead. It would stand to reason that they would search for Charley as part of this investigation. Surely someone within Leon’s orbit could identify her as having worked closely with him. She served in the military, so there’s lots of information available about her to be able to track her down. Most importantly, she’s one of the few remaining people who knows Dexter’s identity, which suggests she should be on his “kill list” to eliminate the threat.

What Happens With Al?

Al (Eric Stonestreet) looking upset in Dexter: Resurrection.

Al (Eric Stonestreet) is the only killer from Leon’s serial killer club who survived Dexter’s wrath. After Dexter took out Lowell (Neil Patrick Harris), Gareth (David Dastmalchian), and Leon, and Mia (Krysten Ritter) was killed via a faked death by suicide, Al, known as the serial killer Rapunzel, was the last target on his list. But Al jets off to Wisconsin to return to his family life, leaving no trace of how to find him behind, and Dexter is unsatisfied that he couldn’t finish the job.

With Al’s file being one that Dexter swiped from Leon’s museum, it stands to reason that he’d be the first victim Dexter would set out to take down now that he knows where he lives. It would make perfect sense for Al’s death to be the way to open Season 2, making its mark among the most disturbing deaths in Dexter.

Who Is the New York Ripper?

Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage) shows off a weapon used by the New York Ripper in Dexter: Resurrection.

The identity of the New York Ripper was technically revealed in the finale. His was one of the inactive killer files Dexter left behind. And when Detective Melvin (Dominic Fumusa) sees it alongside the murder weapon hanging on the wall, he’s delighted to present this definitive evidence to his partner Detective Claudia (Kadia Saraf), who has long been obsessed with solving this “white whale” case. She’s noticeably relieved, excited to take down this man named Don Framt.

But who is Don Framt? The name is odd, it almost sounds like an alias. Fans had been hoping all through Season 1 that the reveal of the Ripper would be massive, potentially even someone already introduced in this show or the original series Dexter. It’s still possible that the show could still run with such an idea. Nonetheless, whoever he is, fans want to put a face to the name, even if it’s one they don’t recognize.

Does Claudia Arrest the Other Inactive Killers?

Wallace and Olivia at the gala in 'Dexter: Resurrection'

The New York Ripper’s file wasn’t the only one Dexter left. It appears he strategically only took the active killer files, prioritizing those people who would continue to kill if he didn’t stop them. For the others who had long since stopped, they were likely either dead, or the police could handle them.

While Claudia will likely be consumed by the New York Ripper case, given her attentiveness and dedication to the job, it’s suspected she will also look into all the other files and go after all those long-retired killers, too. Even if some of them are deceased, she would at least be able to posthumously ensure they were revealed for what they were and bring closure to the victims’ families.

What’s in Store for Harrison’s Future?

Harrison and Dexter out for dinner in Dexter: Resurrection.

The last news on Harrison (Jack Alcott) was that he was planning to go to college to study for a career in law enforcement and criminology. It’s fitting that, as the son of a serial killer, he might want to learn more about the minds of killers. This could be an interesting revelation when what he learns might frighten him about the realities of his father’s lack of emotions and sense of empathy. He also has a girlfriend, Gigi (Emily Kimball), who fans feel might be hiding something.

His journey needs to be explored more. There’s so much to unpack — how he handles knowing what his father does at night, how he manages to pay for college, and where he eventually lives once the hotel inevitably finds out that he’s been squatting there at night.

Does Quinn Learn That Dexter Is Still Alive?

Joey on the phone in Miami in Dexter: Resurrection.

The tease of Detective Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington) finding out about Dexter has had fans at the edges of their seats, and by the end, he still doesn’t know Dexter is alive and that’s why Angel (David Zayas) was hunting in New York. The last phone call he gets from Claudia, he learns not only that Angel is in New York but that he’s there investigating the Bay Harbor Butcher case. Quinn is noticeably puzzled about what Angel is doing. Even though Dexter tries to portray Angel as unhinged and unstable, Quinn knows he was a great detective and would only have followed a lead if there was something to it.

Once Quinn hears of Angel’s death, one of the biggest WTF moments of the season, surely Quinn will investigate further. Why did Angel think the Bay Harbor Butcher case wasn’t solved? All it takes is the name Dexter and/or Harrison Morgan and Quinn is a good enough detective to remember what happened more than a decade ago. He’ll want to get some face time with his former foe, especially to get answers about what really happened to Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) and why she was so bent out of shape for the final year of her life. Fans will recall that Quinn was suspicious of Dexter long ago, even hiring a private detective to look into him. So it isn’t a stretch that he would be on the warpath once he learns he’s still alive and faked his own death.

What Happens With Batista’s Hotel Room and the Evidence in It?

Angela Batista (David Zayas) holding up a photo of Dexter in Dexter: Resurrection.

The evidence on Angel’s cell phone isn’t a threat, since Dexter takes the phone with him. While call records, even content stored in the cloud like voice recordings, could be subpoenaed, if necessary, it’s unlikely to happen. There’s no reason for anyone to think there’s anything incriminating on the device, nor any way to prove it to get a judge to agree.

However, there’s one small detail left untouched: Angel’s hotel room. Viewers will recall that while he was recording voice notes, he had papers strewn up on the wall linking different parts of his investigation, with a mugshot of Dexter smack-dab in the middle. His laptop would also have been left behind in the room. If this evidence was examined and taken seriously, Angel’s death might not be an open and shut case. Knowing how good a detective Claudia is, she might not be satisfied with just the evidence. While she was never one to trust her gut over hard evidence, based on her research in the office, she obviously felt there might be something to what Angel was trying to tell her.

Will the Police Find Dexter’s Fingerprints in Leon’s Museum?

Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) with a bloody face looking angry on Dexter: Resurrection.

Dexter was a blood spatter analyst, so he knows all about the collection of evidence from a crime scene, including DNA. This knowledge and access helped him always stay one step ahead of both his victims and the police in the most gripping episodes of Dexter. He knows how to clean a crime scene as well, and he is seen cleaning off surfaces in Leon’s museum before leaving. He even enters the fake code before he takes off using his knuckles to avoid leaving fingerprints.

But it was a big room and Dexter caused quite a bit of damage there. His clean-up was presumably in haste. When he was searching for his fake Red thumbprint, for example, he touched just about everything. Right before giving Harrison the presumed entry code, he picks up the stack of letters from Cooper (Jared Andrew Bybee), which would leave his fingerprints on them. Surely, there’s at least a partial fingerprint to link him to the room, not to mention security footage from before Leon had them turned off showing him entering the building the day prior.

What Happens With the Discovery About Leon?

Leon at his gala standing in front of a crowd of police officers with a microphone in Dexter: Resurrection.

The police will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that Leon wasn’t who they thought he was. He had a sick obsession with serial killers. It can be presumed that Angel somehow figured this out, confronted him, and lost his life because of it. But the police don’t know what happened after that and don’t know that Leon has long since been killed.

The police probably think Leon is still alive and on the run. Surely, given his status and the murder of a former police officer, they would put plenty of resources behind finding him. Much like Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) in the original, this might only last for a while until the case goes cold, and they move on. Nonetheless, seeing the aftermath and how it’s handled would be intriguing.
