Drunk driving woman has difficulty following officer’s instructions: Beachwood police blotter
OVI: Richmond Road
At 1:50 a.m. Jan. 4, an officer was alerted to a hit-skip crash that had just occurred in South Euclid. The suspect vehicle, a dark-colored Toyota, was reported to be traveling south on South Belvoir Boulevard.
A Beachwood officer waited near the boulevard and two minutes later saw the Toyota drive past at high speed. The officer paced the car as traveling 65 miles per hour on Cedar Road, where the speed limit is 35 MPH.
The car was seen multiple times weaving between lanes. The officer stopped the car at Cedar and Richmond roads. The car came to an immediate stop in the lane of oncoming traffic before then moving to the proper lane.

The driver told police she was coming from a bar at Cedar and Lee roads in Cleveland Heights, where she admitted to consuming two shots.
Police observed damage to her car’s front left bumper and tire rim. The woman said she could not find her proof of insurance.
Suspecting she was intoxicated, an officer instructed the woman to recite the alphabet from the letter D to Q, without singing. She proceeded to sing the alphabet from A to Z.
She was again given the same instruction, but said in reply, “I understand, however, I’m a mother of kids. I’m not going to start there (at D). I’m not going to lie to you.” She then again sang the entire alphabet.
Police next asked her to count backwards from 65 to 49. The woman, however, went backwards from 65 to 26, stopped, and asked if she should stop.
She failed field sobriety testing and was arrested for OVI. She was found to have a blood-alcohol content of .220, well above the state minimum for drunk driving of .08.
The woman, 24, of Beachwood, was additionally charged with having a prohibited BAC of greater than .17, speeding, failing to signal, and making an improper turn.
South Euclid police are investigating the hit-skip incident, which could result in further charges against the woman.
Theft from auto: Beachwood Boulevard
At 6 p.m. Jan. 3, a Beachwood Boulevard resident, 27, reported that that someone had entered his car, parked in his driveway, and took from it his wallet. The car had been left unlocked.
The man later received two alerts about fraudulent uses of his credit card.
A glove had been left by the suspect inside the car.
The theft occurred sometime between 5 p.m. Jan. 2 and 6 p.m. Jan. 3.
Theft: Chagrin Boulevard
At 8:05 p.m. Jan. 2, police were called to Giant Eagle, 24601 Chagrin Blvd., on a report of a shoplifting incident.
At the store, loss prevention personnel informed police that a male filled his shopping cart with 33 items totaling $558.77, then attempted to leave with the merchandise without paying.
Loss prevention stopped the man outside of the store and got back the stolen goods. The man then went to a black hatchback vehicle and drove from the store’s lot.
Police examined automated license plate readers, but were unable to attain the hatchback’s license plate number.
Auto theft: East Groveland Road
At 12:25 p.m. Jan. 3, an East Groveland Road woman, 43, reported that her 2017 Toyota Corolla had been stolen from her driveway.
The woman told police that she parked the car on Jan. 2 and discovered it missing at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 3. She still had the car’s key in her possession. Security cameras at her home were not working.
Police automated license plate readers captured the car being driven at 3:08 a.m. on Fairmount Boulevard, and a minute later on Shaker Boulevard, at Green Road.
OVI: South Woodland Road
At 9:15 p.m. Jan. 2, an officer watched as a Jeep Wrangler sped past on South Green Road. The officer followed the Jeep as it stopped at a red light.
When the light turned green, the Jeep quickly accelerated and was soon after clocked at 54 miles per hour. The speed limit on the street is 35 MPH.
The officer also saw the Jeep, several times, nearly strike the curb.
A traffic stop was conducted and, when asked, the driver denied having consumed alcohol or drugs. Her speech, however, was slurred and her eyes, glassy.
The woman told the officer that she was coming from a friend’s house in Waterville, Ohio, which she said is about an hour away.
As the officer spoke to the woman, she was going through her phone trying to find her proof of insurance. At one point, though, she stopped and asked the officer what he needed, apparently forgetting she was looking for insurance proof.
