ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — The father of a child who was accidentally shot and killed in St. Louis County Monday night is facing charges in the death, according to court documents.

The St. Louis County Police Department said officers responded to the shooting in the 1800 block of Longford Drive at about 8:15 p.m. on Monday. There, they found the 11-year-old boy suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Police interviewed a 13-year-old who was at the residence during the shooting, who said the child who was shot and killed had two guns in a backpack that they were handling and playing with. One of the guns was fired and hit the 11-year-old.

The boy was identified Tuesday as Marshaun Futrell Jr. The 11-year-old was a standout football player at the Matthews-Dickey Boys and Girls Club.

“I received hundreds of phone calls. I’ve talked to 40 to 50 different parents trying to explain how to explain this to their kids,” Coach Rafael Merriweather said. “He never wanted to finish last in a lap, with doing sprint suicides, he wanted to be in the top in anything he did.”

“Our family is heartbroken and in deep mourning. We are asking for your prayers and support as we grieve the tragic loss of our beloved young one — our grandson, our nephew, our cousin — who was taken from us far too soon last night. He was not even 12 years old, yet his life was already shining so brightly. An exceptional athlete with a natural gift for football, he was rising fast — recognized across the nation for his talent, drive, and spirit. But beyond his accomplishments, he was full of life, laughter, and love. This sudden loss has left a void we can’t explain. We are especially lifting up his father and grandfather, who are carrying a weight no one should ever have to bear. Please keep them and our entire family in your prayers during this devastating time…” a relative shared on social media.

“I would say to the family ‘we’re here for you’…Let’s not let Marshaun pass in vain….We can always take a negative and make a positive…Teach about gun safety maybe so we don’t have kids playing with guns, no matter what because at the end of the day, they’re kids,” Coach Merriweather added.

Marshaun Jr.’s father, Marshaun Futrell Sr., had 12 guns at his home that were found by police after the shooting, many of which were loaded and unsecured and accessible to the kids at the home, investigators said. Futrell allegedly admitted to police that all firearms were his and confirmed they were unsecured.

It was a chaotic scene on Monday night, according to neighbor Aurella Rodgers who told 5 On Your Side how, outside her window, “I just saw all of the police cars and was wondering what was going on.”

“I called my neighbor across the street and she said, she couldn’t go into her drive,” Rodgers said. “She said that she knew there was a shooting and it was a kid.”

Rodgers shared that she and her husband used to regularly see Marshaun Jr. outside in the yard practicing his beloved sport, football. Often playing with one of the other young boys who was down the street.

“Seemed like a good kid,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers has lived in this neighborhood for nearly 50 years and is a confidant to other kids who call her “Miss Rodgers.”

“I was devastated to see something like this because it’s never happened like this before in this neighborhood. Never,” Rodgers said.  “I continue to say pray for the family and that they realize they need to be more safe with the things they have in their homes.”

“Sky was the limit for Marshuan…He was one of the hardest working young men I’ve seen do this,” the boy’s coach said.

Futrell is facing three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

He was held on a $100,000 cash-only bond.

Two teens face charges in the shooting death of Ori Portal, who was struck in the chest after one of them accidentally pulled the trigger.

Two teenagers were indicted on Wednesday for the reckless homicide of 14-year-oldOri Portal last month.

On June 7, one of the defendants, 17, stole the keys to the safe in his parents’ house and took out the gun and magazine that belonged to his father. His parents were not aware of his actions.

The next day, he arrived at school and met some of his friends, including the other defendant, a 14-year-old eighth grader, and the victim. He let them hold the gun and the magazine. The 14-year-old even pocketed some of the bullets.

The group then moved toward the sand dunes area in Rishon Lezion, near the Yes Planet, to shoot the gun. The 17-year-old showed the 14-year-old how to use it and handed him the gun. He then shot one bullet towards the target area they agreed on.

Portal then approached the 14-year-old and asked for the gun. He turned around to face him and accidentally pulled the trigger, striking him from close range in the chest.

The defendants tried to save Portal’s life with CPR

Portal dropped to the ground, with the defendant attempting CPR, while the 17-year-old called Magen David Adom to report the incident. Two other members of the group who were there fled the scene.

Emergency medical personnel arrived just a few minutes later and evacuated Portal to the hospital, where he was eventually pronounced dead.View comments

NEED TO KNOW

  • Rebekah Baptiste was found with signs of severe signs of torture, burn marks and signs of abuse to her genitals in July
  • Her father and stepmother have been charged with murder in connection to her killing
  • Months beforehand, she allegedly tried to escape from her home, according to published reports

A slain Arizona child who was found unresponsive on a highway in July had tried to escape her allegedly abusive household a few months prior, according to newly released reports.

Rebekah Baptiste, 10, died on July 30, three days after she was found unresponsive by Holbrook, Ariz. police at the intersection of two highways, according to the Apache County Sheriff’s Office, AZ Family, ABC 15 and 12 News reported at the time.

Her father Richard Baptiste and stepmother Anicia Woods were arrested in connection with Rebekah’s death.

Authorities say their investigation soon found a documented history of alleged violence towards Rebekah in the family home, but child services had allegedly failed to take any action.

During one such instance, in October 2024, Rebekah, then 9, jumped out the window of the second floor of her residence, fled to a nearby gas station and begged for help, alleging to a manager that she was being abused by her stepmother, AZ Family and FOX 10 Phoenix reported this week, citing authorities.

When authorities responded to the incident, Richard and Woods allegedly told them her injuries were self-inflicted, per police records cited by FOX 10 Phoenix.

She was returned to their custody.

Less than a year later, she was found unresponsive on the highway, her toenails removed and exhibiting signs of severe torture, prosecutors said in court in August, AZ Family and ABC 15  reported at the time. She was severely malnourished, per authorities.

“She had bruises from head to toe. There were injuries to her vaginal and anus area,” Kole Soderquist of the Apache County Sheriff’s Office said in court in September, per AZ Family.

CNN reporter grills YouTuber whose Minnesota day care video went viral

A CNN reporter pressed YouTuber Nick Shirley in a segment that aired Tuesday night over his viral video in which he visits Minnesota day care facilities run by the Somali community, which he accuses of fraud.

In the video, shared by Elon Musk and Vice President Vance this week, Shirley knocks on doors at various day care centers, pointing out that no children are visible, which he cites as evidence that they are improperly collecting funds.

In a segment on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” reporter Whitney Wild confronts Shirley outside one of the centers that featured in his viral video, which has received particular attention for its misspelled sign, “Quality Learing Center.”

“Did you come during normal operating hours when you came to visit?” Wild asks.

“I came at 11 a.m., I believe, and then also came the following day later in the day. The point of it is not whether or not I came at the right time of their operation hours, the point is that — blacked-out doors, they can’t give you any information, you call that number, no one answers,” Shirley responds, wearing a sweatshirt mocking the center’s misspelling.

“I wasn’t trying to go inside and there should be a way for somebody to actually be able to call that number and somebody be able to answer it. These aren’t real businesses,” he adds.

“But surely you don’t think a day care should just be unlocked? You shouldn’t be able to just walk into a day care,” Wild says.

“There should be a reception,” Shirley says.

“No, every day care is locked,” Wild replies.

“So OK, you bring up a fair point then,” Shirley says. “But why can’t they actually give me information how to enroll a child?”
